Hyman H. Zimmerman, one of the owners of the largest liquor businesses
in Chicago, Illinois, Zimmerman's Discount Liquor Store, died of heart
failure on Thursday, January 29, 2004, in Rancho Mirage, California,
at the age of 89.

Mr. Zimmerman was born in Montreal, Canada, to Russian immigrants, and
the family moved to the West Side of Chicago when Mr. Zimmerman was 5.
Mr. Zimmerman graduated from Marshall High School. In 1933, he and
brothers Max and Ben obtained a liquor license, and relatives believe
it was the longest running license in the city.

"They got it right after Prohibition," said his son, Frank. Mr.
Zimmerman served in the Navy during World War II as a chief petty
officer on a base in Geneva, N.Y. In 1959, Zimmerman's Discount Liquor
Store, at Randolph and Franklin Streets, was the world's largest
liquor store, his son said.

The family eventually sold the liquor store to Binny's Beverage Depot.
After 40 years of working at the liquor store, Mr. Zimmerman came out
of retirement to work as a maitre d' at Frankie Z's Clark Bar, his
son's restaurant.

Mr. Zimmerman spent half of the year in Palm Springs, California. He
also contributed to numerous charities. "We couldn't even decide which
charity people should donate to in his memory because he gave so
much," his son said. Mr. Zimmerman was married for 48 years to
Gertrude Shaffer, who died in 1985.
