On train ride from the Bronx home to Queens tonight, I heard that
Claudia Cohen died unexpectedly today. Any confirmation here?? Claudia
was a gossip lady on Regis & KathyLee/Kelli and always had rich
powerful men on her arm. He ex is Ron Perelman, the zillionaire Revlon
chairman. And she dated US Sen. Al DAmato. I hadn't heard anything of
her being ill, and a search in this group doesn't show any
healthwatches, either.

Claudia Cohen, 56, Socialite and a Reporter of Gossip, Is Dead
By MARGALIT FOX
Claudia Cohen, a high-profile gossip reporter for television and
newspapers who was a frequent subject of the gossip columns herself,
partly because of her marriage to, and remunerative divorce from, the
billionaire businessman Ronald O. Perelman, died yesterday in
Manhattan. She was 56 and had homes in Manhattan and Easthampton, N.Y.

The cause was ovarian cancer, said Chris Taylor, a spokeswoman for Mr.
Perelman.

Ms. Cohen was known for her aggressive pursuit of celebrity news and
her ability to handicap the Academy Awards. She first came to public
attention in the late 1970s as a reporter and editor for Page Six, the
well-thumbed column of The New York Post. In the early '80s, she wrote
a gossip column, "I, Claudia," for The Daily News of New York.

In recent years, Ms. Cohen was a regular correspondent, covering
entertainment, for the syndicated talk show "Live With Regis and
Kelly" and its predecessor, "Live With Regis and Kathie Lee." She was
previously an entertainment reporter for "The Morning Show" on WABC-
TV.

Claudia Lynn Cohen was born on Dec. 16, 1950, in Englewood, N.J. Her
father, Robert, was president of the Hudson County News Company, a
major distributor of newspapers and magazines.

Ms. Cohen earned a bachelor's degree in communications from the
University of Pennsylvania in 1972 and afterward was on the staff of
More, a progressive journalism review. She joined Page Six as a
reporter in 1977, serving as its editor from 1978 to 1980.

In 1985, with her marriage to Mr. Perelman, now the chairman of
Revlon, Ms. Cohen became a boldface name herself. (Their union was Ms.
Cohen's only marriage; she was Mr. Perelman's second wife of four.)
The couple were frequent guests at glittering parties and charity
events in New York and the Hamptons, and Ms. Cohen was considered a
crucial person to know if anybody who was somebody wanted to become
even more of a somebody.

The public scrutiny of Ms. Cohen's private life only intensified with
her divorce from Mr. Perelman in 1994. As was widely reported, she
received an out-of-court settlement of $80 million.

Ms. Cohen is survived by her parents, Robert and Harriet Cohen of
Englewood and Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, James, of Alpine, N.J.; and
a daughter, Samantha Perelman of Manhattan.

After her divorce from Mr. Perelman, Ms. Cohen, a Democrat, was
romantically involved for about a year with Senator Alfonse M.
D'Amato, Republican of New York. In early 1995, at the start of the
relationship, Senator D'Amato called a press conference to announce
that he was in love. He was, according to news reports at the time,
the first senator in the history of the United States to do so.

Did he also call a press conference to announce that he had fallen out
of love?

The only thing I remember about the marriage is that Claudia was
apparently in charge of furnishing their mansion, and she was spending
bazillions of dollars doing it while being as nasty to vendors and
designers as she could. All of this was covered in loving detail by
her old paper, the New York Post.

"The Morning Show" is not recent. It was Regis Philbin's first talk
show on WABC, and the co-host was Cyndy Garvey. It premiered in 1983.
Kathie Lee Gifford replaced Garvey in 1985 and the title was changed to
"Live with Regis & Kathie Lee" in 1988, when the show went national.
Kelly the Ripper replaced Gifford in 2000.

All this aside, Claudia Cohen had been doing gossip on TV since the
1970s, pretty much as soon as she wound up with the Post. She appeared
on Stanley Siegel's talk show regularly.

Honestly, I didn't think the people I overheard in the subway were
sources to be trusted. They must have been either associated with her
at WABC-TV or in some medical capacity. This is sad to hear, Claudia
Cohen being so young at 56. I never appreciated her work, as her
reports with Regis always seemed to be big on hype and short on
substance.

And I know this may sound crazy, but this woman had nearly has much
face-body work and plastic surgery as Joan Rivers. Could it be
possible that all of Claudia's operation to look good somehow led to
or spurred on her cancer?

It's about as likely as it is that you could have a higher risk of
ovarian cancer from posting to Usenet (and yes, I know you're a man -
that's how unlikely it is).

Guilty as charged. About being a man, that is.
And I said that the theory was probably crazy.
It's a stretch, I would agree, that just because Claudia Cohen's
eyebrows were closer to the back of her neck than to her eyes, that
would nonetheless have no effect on her ovaries.

Take a moment to learn the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer (guys,
too).

The American Cancer Society, the Society of Gynecological Oncologists,
and the Gynecology Oncology Group all -- just last week -- endorsed
the following symptoms. Although 26,000 women in the U.S. will be
diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year, 16,000 will die. 75 percent
of women are diagnosed in stage III or IV. Yet, this is a curable
cancer when found early!

Symptoms that are UNUSUAL FOR YOU and become PERSISTENT and
PROGRESSIVELY WORSE, and occur EVERY DAY, are:

bloating
indigestion
uninary frequency
pelvic pain

Your physician should at least put ovarian cancer in the mix of
possible diagnoses.

Go to www.ovariancancer.org or www.ovarian.org for dependable
information.
