I remember that.the MiG-25 was considered advanced at the time!

The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again,
at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.

from the "wish I had kept the clipping" files.... one of the bestest,
and most classic pieces of great international diplo-speak.

The Russians demanded Japan return Belenko, and arguably even
more so, his plane.

they replied Belenko was under investigation for illegally
entering the country, and the Japanese needed the plane
for evidence...
=======
an acquaintance at Panix tracked down a NYT article
from then which pretty much matched my memory:

>"Officially, the Japanese have kept a straight face on the issue of

>as necessary during an investigation into Lieutenant Belenko's
>violation of Japan's airspace, as well as the matter of damage to
>Japanese airport equipment when the plane ran off the Hakodate runway,
>and also the question of imposing an import duty on the
>multimillion - dollar plane."

Ahhhhh... it's good to know my memory of half century
ago events is still intact. But where are my car keys?
