Jack Worthington, 86, a machinist and quality control engineer for the
Indian Head Naval Ordnance Station until his retirement in 1979, died
of heart disease March 12 [2007] at his home in Accokeek [Maryland].
Mr. Worthington was the first Scoutmaster in Accokeek in the 1940s.
During 30 years with the Boy Scouts, he served in many roles,
including district commissioner.
He was born in Cincinnati [Ohio], grew up in Summit, Kentucky, and was
a veteran of World War II. He moved to Washington [DC] in 1941 and
worked at the Washington Navy Yard. In 1950, he moved to Accokeek,
where he built his family home.
He was a master gardener of vegetables and volunteered at the National
Colonial Farm, an outdoor living museum in Accokeek. He also was
active in other areas of community service throughout his life.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Alva Worthington; seven
children, Katherine Griffin of Brandywine, Jack C. Worthington of
Bend, Oregon, Virginia Cowart of Jacksonville, Florida, Daniel
Worthington of Oscoda, Michigan, Jeffrey Worthington of Accokeek, Mark
Worthington of Winchester, Va., and Eric Worthington of Palo Alto,
California; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
