Bill Keene, retired traffic and weather reporter for KNX (CBS radio) in Los
Angeles has died in Tucson AZ at age 73, following a stroke three weeks ago.
He worked for CBS in LA over 35 years, both on radio and KNXT television.
Details and a video are available at http://www.knx1070.com . I believe
(but am not sure)that among the terms he added to the lexicon were "fender
bender" and "chrome cruncher". A very colorful guy ....RIP, Bill.

Keene folded the bad jokes and puns into the weather reports too. Remember
his talking about
Catalina Eddie? (a real weather phenomenon known as the Catalina Eddy.)
All this goes way back to the days of "From the desert to the sea, to all of
Southern California...a good evening......." and a whole hour of local
news!

I consider it one of the highlights of my ongoing professional broadcast
career--and, in fact, the first "celebrity colleague" highlight thereof--that I
had the opportunity to work alongside such an old-school master while but a
greenhorn trafficaster during the period 1982-85 in Los Angeles. Inasmuch as
our styles then, as now, were quite disparate, I didn't really learn any tricks
of the trade from him per se, but I WAS profoundly inspired by his
professionalism and, of course, quick wit.

Sir Keane, though I've not since toiled the traffic beat (and, truthfully, hope
I'm never relegated to same in the future!), a bit of your broadcast leadership
is--and shall always remain--evident in every one of my new-millennium radio
efforts.

Sincerely,

BRYAN STYBLE/Chicago
