Odd this. The Matquess of Lothian's eldest son and heir cannot decide
how to be styled. At the Memorial serive for the 17th Duke of Norfolk
in Nov 2002, he was _The Earl of Ancram_, and was so styled at the
Memorial service to the Earl of Perth in January, 2003; but at more
recent gatherings - the Memorial Services for Lord Jenkins of Hillhead
& the 6th Earl of Limerick, he was _Mr Michael Ancram_.
Similarly, his wife fluctuates between _the Countess of Ancram_ and
_Lady Jane Ancram_.

The Royals do attend Memorial services but if they have prior
engagements they send along representatives. The Queen rarely attends
such gatherings - except for very close relations.

The Memorial Service was not Getty's funeral. That took place months
ago.

I can understand that about the Queen but for these other minor people to send
"representatives" seems very silly. You either go or you don't but sending your
maid instead seems pathetic.

Terry:

The British Royals set their schedules a year or more in advance. Obviously,
the death of friends is something that is not "scheduled". If the Royal were to
drop everything to attend friends' funerals, a great many people would be
disappointed and inconvenienced. It is, after all, their "job" to show up at
openings and various meetings - literally hundreds of these every year. Thus,
unlike you or me, the Prince of Wales is not free to take a "personal day"
because someone like Paul Getty dies. He is expected to carry on his
appointments, regardless.

It is thus a token of respect, rather than "crap" for the POW to send a
representative to the services. So, the answer to your question is a qualified
no. Usually, they cannot because their time is so tightly scheduled.
