James Robert Archer-Burton, OBE (Mil), OStJ, Provost Marshal with the
8th Army, in the Western Desert 1943-45, & a former Chief Constable
Hastings & the North Riding Constabulary, Yorkshire, died 2 May, 2003.
He was 90.

He was born 30 September, 1912, the son of James Henry Archer-Burton,
of Emsworth, Hampshire, and was educated at the Imperial Service
College, Windsor.

Career: joined the Metropolitan Police in 1934; Metropolitan Police
College, Hendon, 1935; Inspector, Metropolitan Police, 1937-40,
Seconded Provost Service 1940-46, 2nd Lieutenant 1940, captain 1941,
Major 1942, Lieutenant-Colonel 1943, commanded 61 Division Provost
company, 1941-42, Assistant Provost Marshal 44th Infantry Division,
1942-43, and was mentioned in despatches; Deputy Provost Marshal,
Cyrenaica and Tripolitania District 1943, Provost Marshal, 8th Army
1943-45, and was wounded, and again mentioned in despatches; Allied
Provost Marshal, British Troops in Austria, 1945-46; Superintendent,
Metropolitan Police, 1948-54; Chief Constable of Hastings & St
Leonards 1954-58; Chief Constable of the North Riding of Yorkshire,
1958-65; Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel, Army Officers' Emergency
Reserve, &c.

He was appointed to the Order of St John, and awarded the OBE
(military) in 1944.

Archer-Burton was twice wed, firstly in 1941, to (Thelma) Joan,
daughter of Percy Edmund Tickler, of Datchet, Buckinghamshire, by whom
he had one son Robert, and one daughter, Sally; & married secondly to
Rosemary.

He was predeceased by both wives, and is survived by his children.
