Janet S. LaPolla Teacher, Artist
Janet S. LaPolla, 82, a onetime English and history teacher who later
exhibited her paintings in Northern Virginia, died June 30 [2010] at a
rehabilitation center in Wilmington, N.C. She had complications from
pneumonia. She was a former resident of Fairfax City.
Mrs. LaPolla was a teacher in California before settling in Fairfax in 1968.
She taught at Flint Hill School in Fairfax County in the 1970s. She often
exhibited her paintings as a member of the Vienna Arts Society.
Janet Mae Somers was born in New York City and graduated from San Jose State
University in California, where she lived for more than a decade.
She left Fairfax in the late 1990s and lived in Florida before settling in
North Carolina.
Her husband of 60 years, Robert LaPolla, died in 2007.
Survivors include three children, Randy Jayne of Wilmington, Bruce LaPolla
of Manassas and Brad LaPolla of Fairfax; a sister; nine grandchildren; and
six great-grandchildren.
