He was born 8 April, 1919, the son of Mr H.C. Betts, of Nuneaton,
Warwickshire, & was educated at King Edward's School, Nuneaton; &
Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge University.
Betts joined the Royal Air Force in 1941; Air Cdre, 1966; Assistant
Commandant (Eng.), Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, 1971-72; Air
Vice-Marshal, 1972; Air Officer Commanding No. 24 Group, RAF, 1972-73;
retired from the RAF in 1974.
Air Vice-Marshal Betts, of who lived in retirement at Bath, was Head
of the Control and Inspection Div., Agency for the Control of
Armaments, WEU, Paris, 1974-84.
He married his first wife, Pauline, daughter of Lt.-Col. P. Heath, in
1943. She predeceased him. There were two daughters of the union, Sue
and Stephanie.
He married secondly, 1964, Margaret Doreen, daughter of Colonel W.H.
Young, DSO. She died in 1993.
He married thirdly, in 1996, Denys Mary, daughter of William de
Montigny Clarke. She survives him.
Betts was appointed CBE in 1963.
