C. Allen Harpine Jr. Park Service Lawyer
C. Allen Harpine Jr., 86, a lawyer for the National Park Service's land
acquisition division from 1961 to 1980, died October 14 [2008] at his home
in Fairfax County [Virginia]. He had leukemia.
In the land acquisition division, Mr. Harpine helped to buy land for Redwood
National Park and Point Reyes National Seashore, both in California, and the
Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio.
In 1956, he began his career at the Department of the Interior as a lawyer
and worked for the Solicitor's Office before joining the Park Service. He
had a private law practice in Alexandria for two years before retiring in
1982.
Casper Allen Harpine Jr. was born in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He served in
the Army during World War II in North Africa and Southern France and was
stationed in Fort Custer, Mich., during the Korean War. He received his law
degree from American University in 1956.
During retirement, he worked on Social Security cases as a volunteer lawyer
for AARP's Legal Counsel for the Elderly.
His wife of 41 years, Mary Feduska Harpine, died in 1991.
Survivors include two sons, William D. Harpine of Graniteville, South
Carolina, and Lawrence J. Harpine of Fairfax County, and six grandchildren.
