Hogan's Heroes Cast?

How many are still alive? Bob Crane's fate is pretty common
knowledge, and Richard Dawson died a couple of years ago.
What about Werner Klemperer (sp?) and the rest of the cast.
He and John Banner (Sgt Schultz) must be well into their golden
years, if they're around.

Schultz (John Banner) died a year or two after the show ended
Hochstetter (Gestopo agent) is dead as well.
Burkhalter and Klink are alive and acting.
One of the Hildas ended up in the gutter due to drinking and being
dumped by Bob Crane

I had Leon Askin (Gen Burkhalter) penciled in on my draft list this
year, but never got that deep. Could find no news of his death and
he was born in the 190-s, plus he was kinda heavy.

He's also a Holocaust survivor; a few years back, when some
revisionists were spouting that "it never happened" crap, Clary went on a
speaking tour to relate his experiences being captured by the Germans
when he was just a kid. A good friend who teaches history heard him at a
high school assembly; she was very impressed.

Actually the actors in Hogan's heroes who played Germans were in fact strongly
anti-Nazi and I believe some of them worked for the allied underground during
WWII, but I don't remember who.

As I recall, Sgt. Schultz (John Banner) lost some family members in the
Holocaust. Oddly he played a similar character to the good sergeant in the
1962-3 movie 36 HOURS, with James Garner and Eva Marie Saint.

Off the subject a little but Hogan's Heroes is a big
hit in Germany. Enough time has passed that a comedy
featuring the Nazi's can be aired.

Werner Klemperer is Jewish and admitted in TV Guide that he had not told
his father (the famous conductor) about his _Hogan_ role.
Klemperer played Adolf Eichmann in a low-budget circa-1960 film.
Eichmann's Nazi contact in South America is played by John Banner. It's
bizarrely amusing to see Klemperer kowtowing to the all-powerful Banner,
especially when the humorless Banner bitingly orders Klemperer, "You know
_nothing_, you say _nothing_."
It is still astonishing to me that CBS vetoed the original federal-prison
concept for HOGAN'S HEROES in favor of one involving Nazis and Reich
officers, and this only twenty years after the end of the war.

Glad to hear about Leon Askin being alive. He was fantastic as a spy in
"Knock on Wood" with Danny Kaye remember that line with "Gromek"??
Also he played a Jewish functionary in this TV film with Melvyn Douglas
and Leonard Frey set in Winnipeg. Leon Askin was fantastic in reading
from the scrolls of the law.
Funny how many of the characters in that Hogan's heros cast were Jewish!!!!
