JoAnne S. O'BrienVeterinarian, Chow Chow Breeder
JoAnne S. O'Brien, 79, a veterinarian and chow chow dog breeder, died April
21 [2008] of a heart attack at her home in the District.
Dr. O'Brien was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and grew up in Tinley Park,
Illinois. Her parents bought their first chow in 1931 and established the
well-known Linnchow Kennel a year later. Linnchow, based in the Chicago
area, had produced 35 champions by 1957.
She attended the University of Illinois for three years and then transferred
to the University of Minnesota, where she was one of the first two women
admitted to the veterinary school.
After receiving a veterinary degree in 1952, she worked with small animals
in the Chicago area. She then married a career Marine officer and lived in
Hawaii, California and the District.
She began practicing veterinary medicine in the District at the W.P. Collins
Memorial Hospital in the mid-1960s. In 1969, she acquired the practice, now
called Collins Hospital for Animals. She also served on the Board of
Veterinary Medicine for the District of Columbia.
She served on the admissions committee for the Virginia-Maryland Regional
College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech and was involved with the
creation and funding of a lab for companion animal reproduction and
endocrinology studies.
Dr. O'Brien retired in 1987 but continued her involvement with chow chows.
She showed her champion dogs across the country and worked for more than 20
years with Imogene Earle at the Pandee Kennel in Burtonsville. They produced
more than 30 champions, numerous national regional winners and a Best In
Show with CH Pandee's Red Sing.
Dr. O'Brien had been a member of the Chow Chow Club since age 12 and twice
served as its president. She also served as president and treasurer of the
National Capital Kennel Club in the District [Washington DC.
In addition to traveling with her dogs to shows, she visited Kenya, Russia,
China and a number of other countries. She had fond memories of pre-Castro
Cuba and looked forward to a time when she could return to the island
nation.
Her marriage to William O'Brien ended in divorce.
There are no immediate survivors.
