US military scores laser success
The US army has, for the first time, shot down an artillery shell in
flight using a high-powered laser weapon.
The laser tracked and locked on to the shell, before firing a stream
of concentrated light energy photons and destroying it.
The US Army's Space and Missile Defence Command said that "seconds
later, at a point well short of its intended destination, the
projectile was destroyed".
The Mobile Tactical High Energy Laser (MTHEL) is being developed by
the TRW Corporation for use by the US military and the Israeli Defence
Ministry.
Two years ago, it successfully shot down a Katyusha rocket, but in
Monday's test it managed to destroy a shell moving at a higher speed.
The test took place at the White Sands missile range in New Mexico.
Potent weapon
A laser is an intense beam of light, carefully corralled so that the
beam does not diverge and weaken. In the MTHEL, the energy is supplied
by a controlled chemical reaction.
The laser is a potentially potent weapon as the beam travels literally
at the speed of light and can cross great distances with minimal loss
of intensity.
Such a beam could knock out targets at distances ranging from tens of
kilometres to, in theory, thousands of kilometres.
"This shoot-down shifts the paradigm for defensive capabilities,"
Lieutenant General Joseph Cosumano, head of the missile defence
command, told Reuters news agency.
"We have shown that even an artillery projectile hurtling through the
air at supersonic speed is no match for a laser."
Israeli interest
The laser was built as a joint project between the US and Israel.
The Israeli Government is interested in the system because Katyusha
rockets are used by militant Islamic groups in attacks on Israel.
The system stems in part from a commitment former US President Bill
Clinton made in April 1996 to then Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres
to aid Israel in developing a security system against rockets.
Lasers were behind the space-based missile defence shield idea,
labelled "Star Wars", first suggested by US President Ronald Reagan in
1983.
The Pentagon has been working on a variety of other laser weapon
technologies that could be used to shoot down ballistic missiles in
flight, although deployment of such weapons is at least a decade away.

At least he lived through the experience. I would wager not all of his
commrades did.
Very true, he freely admitted that he would not have lasted much longer
though. The stories he told me are inspirational, in that he survived, and
horrific, in that many did not and the manner they died. I recorded many of
his reflections on tape. He was a great man, as were the men who did not
make it. I doubt that I would have had the courage to survive as he did. He
came through all that and still had love in his heart. He inspired my
father, and many of my family, to enlist. I could not because of health

Chris, Monday Nov. 11th we will celebrate Veterans day here in the United
States. I salute your grandfather and all those who have served their
countries with honor. Very soon we will have no veterans left from WW II.
It's important we don't forget what sacrifices were made on all sides, military
personnel as well as civilians sacrificed. It's important we don't forget the
suffering on both sides, both in the battlefields and at home. It's important
we don't let the alliances formed and the good will forged fade away in these
turbulent times. I fear we are on the road to another war with Iraq, and your
nation along with mine will do the brunt of the work. Hug a veteran on Monday
and say thanks. Thanks for what you did for me and for future generations.

I don't think Canada will last long as an "ally". With arabs and
muslims flooding into Canada with no background check, the Canadian
government taken over by socialist/totalitarians and the plunging
Canadian economy, I imagine that we will need more border controls up
there within 5 years than we have between the U.S. and Mexico.

This one isn't. And I don't give a DAMM if the rest of the world
likes us, I want them to FEAR US. Next time around YOU can defend
YOURSELF.
They are afraid enough that they have always done as we requested in the
long run. We always get the oil we need and we used their bases for
attacks on Baghdad last time. I notice that one reason they are not
wanting us over there again is that they are afraid of us taking over
the whole area and not going home. Also note that when it looks like we
are really going to send people over, Saddam makes concessions to the
UN. That is a fear of our bubble gum army.
I also notice that the Chinese have so far backed down when faced with
direct attack. They are not as afraid of us as I would like because they
don't see us as having the hard core resolve we need to, but when they
were faced with it, they negotiated and backed down. Look at the apology
we gave them - we apologized for making an emergency landing on their
island without permission. And yes, I am aware that making the apology
at all was face saving to them and made us weaker in their eyes, but
they were afraid enough of us that they negotiated.
Name one country that is not afraid of facing the US bubble gum military

the country that it is the official position of that government.

Unnecessary? Man, you must have slept through your history classes! I

The twin nuclear bombings of Japan resulted in a few hundred thousand
casualties, but no estimate
of an invasion of mainland Japan (which was the only other option to
bring the war to an end) put the
number of projected casualties under a million.
Yes, it WAS necessary, as of the choices available, it was the least
destructive to human life.
The actual death toll associated with an invasion would probably have
been several million, as
it would have been accompanied by unrestricted carpet bombing to 'soften
up' the areas
that would have received the invasion forces. Millions of lives were
likely saved and much widespread
property damage was avoided as well.

Yeah, right. I replied. Maybe your newsfeed hasn't updated at the
server yet.
CJ
Yes, I can, but it's above your pay grade.
Except I didn't do anything of the kind. What is the source of your deep
seated need to lie so badly? The United States was attacked. The United
States didn't like that. The United States finished a war that someone else
started. Don't like it? Tough. The atomic bomb saved uncounted millions of
lives by ending that war before invasion became necessary. You REALLY need
to talk to some of those old fellows who were about to make the invasion.
Oh, and you also need to check the number of fatalities again. You are way
off.
I guess they're stuck for words now. To me it seems like they are totally
perplexed that we have the nerve to criticise them. They must be thinking
"how come they don't suck up to us, we are americans?"
What does paygrade have to do with it? I'm just asking for proof, for you to
backup your statement. After all, statement without back up is nothing more
than bullscheisse. Come one, send us one of your beloved nukes!
Only if you ignore a reply that was posted an hour before you posted this.
You were answered. You chose to ignore it.
No, we know you're mentally handicapped and just don't know any better.
>It looks like it hit home too - none of them have been able to answer
>me yet.
And just how many spy planes does YOUR country have the guts to put up over other
countries to keep tabs on their military...or like the rest of the free world...do you
RELY on American intelligence gathering?????????
Yeah...I can see the headlines now...New Zealand Spy Plane Shot Down.......
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You know how a dog thinks it's hidden if it covers it's head? The idiot
thinks that by ignoring your post it is not there.
Guts? Did you think it takes guts to send out spyplanes?
Thats fucking hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guts doesn't come from guns or spyplanes.
...or like the rest of the free world...do you
> RELY on American intelligence gathering?????????
No but you seem to rely on ours. Why else did you have personel at Pine Gap?
>
> Yeah...I can see the headlines now...New Zealand Spy Plane Shot
Down.......
New Zealand? What does NZ have to do with Australia, you fucking dumbass?
>
> HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Is that meant to be written laugh or something? Thats a new concept.
Much good it does you anyway. You couldn't predict any of the terror
attackes, September 11, USS Cole, all those embassies, etc, etc.......
So much for dumbass yank intellligence............
Fucking dumbass yanks!
You often are found to be in a state of shame when confronted with 'a
statement of facts'; so that question would be best answered by your
goodself.
I will do as you ask but, in the UK, we commemorate Remembrance Day this
Sunday (10th). So, as the Vets will be around London then, I will do it then
if that is OK. Poppies are sold to raise funds for the care of old/infirm
soldiers. Though I feel that more should be done by the Government and that
the funds raised by the sale of the poppies should be 'on top of'. I am for
the raising of 'extra' funds via the sale of the poppy as it reminds people
and allows some involvement. I just wish that our government did not forget
them. There is a pub near where I live that a few of the old soldiers have a
beer after the services. I try to buy a beer for them. Unfortunately, due to
old age, the 'round' is getting cheaper.
It does look as if we are heading down a path to war. Saddam will play for
time, as is usual, but I feel that he has played his last hand. I have a
member of my family who will be involved if war happens, so it is not an
easy time. Having said that he reminds us that he knew what may happen if he
joined up. It is what all his training is for after all and he takes it all
in his stride. It is the wait and see bit that gets to him most.

Why did you/did you consider coming to the US to work? Are you just a whore?
Is your wife?

Too bad you're powerless to do anything about it.
So are we.

Boy, the educational system in and around Melbourne must be antiquated.
Dunkirk is where the brits got kicked out the continent but the Nazi.

If by "we" you mean Clueless Liberals and "disenfranchised" Democrats,
you'd be correct. You had your chance. It's up to the rest of us to
fix what you broke.
Why should I care about what the Brits did or didn't do? I've never even
been to the UK.
Remember Pearl Harbour?
I go to the pub all the time but I've never of anything like a "pint".

Has absolutely zilch to do with it! The question is COULD YOU. You couldn't!
You're just another lame ass yank!
No from someone who voted FOR gun control. Who celebrates the day when they
took the guns AWAY from all those gun crazed maniacs.
I don't want a gun so I don't care anyway. If I wanted one, I would be here
complaining that they took them away.
To me, you dumbass yanks are the fucking losers, you have to live in the gun
crazed place.
Have fun playing cowboys and indians! We Australians are now grown up and we
don't those childish things anymore.
When will YOU become civilised?

Maybe it is above your paygrade to understand something even THAT simple.

I'd love to, but you haven't the clearance. Besides, that would not be cost
effective.

One might think you'd care enough to know a bit of world history. Thanks for
clearing that up.

If you're going to cite something Axel old poof be sure you speel it propply.
Tis Pearl Harbor. You don't want the yanks spelling it Lundun, or Melburn do
ya, mate?

You're a whore then. Willing to prostitute yourself for what? Money?
Training? What exactly caused you to drop all your lofty principles to come
and live and work in the horrible USA? I'm curious Axel as to what your "
price " ?
I anxiously await your response.
No. Where is that?

So? You're still their property.
Our personnel cought them!

No way. We already have a steady flow of enemy's these days and don't
need anymore. Thanks for asking and we'll keep you in mind. Besides,
enemies with Canada would mean that we would have to redirect the
pipeline, plus we would have to beg New Zealand for their poorer
quality building materials and shit beer to make up for the nice stuff
you send us (GO MOLSON!), and they won't let our boats in to pick it
up to boot. This would mean we would have to hear Greg Proctor
laughing at us all the way to the bank. That would be bad.

Nah, we have cells galore so it would be obvious that they are/were
operating here most of all. Although our border is porous, it was easy
enough just to fly here and set up shop. I will add, though, that I
have met a lot of Muslims that were in this country illegally but they
sped home after 9/11.
