We are spending the weekend with some friends on Nantucket in July....we
were hoping to escape by oruselves somewhere.
Are there any beaches on Nantucket that tolerate nudity?
On the islands often any secluded spot will do.
However popular reports suggest a beach at the end of Miacomet Road on
the south side of the island.
The end part is dirt (hard packed sand) per my understanding.
As with any beach endeavor that you ar eunfamiliar with, if the locals
are nude, its OK to be nude. If dressed - stay dressed.

Thanks....
Anyone know where we can get some first hand reports of precisely where to
go?
I looked at this map:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/200+Miacomet+Rd+Nantucket+MA+02554-4400/
...and the beach seems to cover and awful lot of area.
Anything more specific?

The area is expanse.
Try www.netnude.com
Post there. User "Miacomet" used to live on the island and knows the
geography well.
Beyond that I have this report from 2002.

Subject: Nantucket Island Report
For naturists looking for an island getaway with nude beach, consider
Nantucket this summer.
Miacomet Beach is Nantucket's recognized nude beach. It is on the
south side of the island 3 miles from Nantucket town. To reach it by
car, go south on Surfside Road and pass the Muse, a bar and pizza
place. Look on the right for Miacomet Road (NOT Ave.) and go right. Go
south on this road until the asphalt stops, Miacomet Pond will be
visible on your right. Continue on the sand road straight. There will
be a fork in the sand road, one goes right toward the pond, the other
straight, away. Go straight, away.. In one minute you will see the
wooden railings of the parking lot. Park and go through the
established path through the dunes. This is the nude area.
You can also take the NRTA shuttle bus to Surfside Beach. From town
the bus leaves at least hourly, about June 10 to Labor Day. It costs
$2.00 and can transport two bikes. The bus arrives at Surfside Beach
(clothed) where there are restrooms, cold outdoor showers and a snack
stand. Go down the beach and take a right, west. Walk on the beach
about 20 minutes or 3/4 mile until you see other naturists. You have
gone too far if you reach where Miacomet Pond meets the ocean. This
part of the beach is not nude.. The nude area is close to the pond,
though, about 2 or 3 minutes walk.
You can bike either by following car directions and locking your bike
to the railings or biking to Surfside where there is a bike rack.
There is a nice bike path to Surfside Beach distance 3 miles. It's
also very popular with joggers and rollerbladers.
Whichever way you get to Miacomet, bring something to eat and drink
with you as there are no facilities at Miacomet itself. There is the
snack stand at Surfside Beach which usually has hot dogs, burgers, and
drinks. In town, very close to the Hy Line wharf, there's A & P
supermarket (and you thought they were extinct!) They have the usual
dry goods plus ready made sandwiches. As you walk down the Hy Line
wharf, called Straight Wharf, on the right is Provisions. They usually
open early and have great soups and sandwiches. Highly recommended for
a picnic to take to the beach. You could call them on your cell phone
from the fast ferry to place your order and have it waiting!
508-228-3258. The Turkey Terrific is fantastic! Smoked turkey,
stuffing, cranberry sauce. If you want a sit down breakfast after
getting off the boat, Fog Island is a couple of minutes away from the
ferry docks at 7 South Water St. If you are flying in, Hutch's
Restaurant at the airport does breakfast/lunch at reasonable prices.
They can do your picnic lunch also. You can take a taxi from the
airport to Surfside Beach.
Miacomet Beach is an ocean surf beach and has quite an undertow some
days. It is also a beach where vehicles can drive. Some naturists
drive on the beach and use their vehicles as wind breaks. Children
should be watched very closely! If you have a windscreen bring it. If
the sea breeze whips up you will be glad you have it. Nantucket is 30
miles at sea after all! Nantucket Police patrol on ATV's and are not
concerned about nudity. They are checking that vehicles have current
season beach driving permits. They also don't like underage drinking
and glass containers.
If you will be on Nantucket a few days you could also try the area of
beach around Hummock Pond. This is a conservation area where no houses
overlook the beach. Sometimes I prefer it if Miacomet is too busy.
Take the NRTA shuttle bus to Madaket. They run hourly. Go to the beach
and walk left, east. After 35 minutes or so, you should reach the
area. Anywhere away from sand vehicle access points should be fine.
Again, a windscreen is a good idea and also provides privacy. It's a
long walk, and usually hardly anyone around. Vehicles are not allowed
to drive on this part of beach, but they park behind the dunes at the
access points.
To reach Nantucket, get to Hyannis. There are also flights from
Boston, Providence, RI and New Bedford. (Cape Air:1-800-352-0714) From
Hyannis there are two ferry companies you can take. Both offer high
speed (one hour) service. Forget the conventional slow boats-you will
lose too much time. The Steamship Authority tel: 508-477-8600 and the
Hy Line tel: 800-492-8082 both charge around $50-$60 round trip. You
can also fly from Hyannis to Nantucket, 12 minutes. Call Island Air
1-800-248-7779.
If you don't want to bring your own bike you can rent them on
Nantucket. Rental firms are near where both ferries arrive. Ask
anyone. To investigate expensive overnight options, call Nantucket
Accomodations at 508-228-9559. For general tourist questions the
Nantucket Visitor's Services office is right in town at 25 Federal
Street, tel: 508-228-0925. The youth hostel on Nantucket last year
charged $22. per night! As a bonus it is right on Surfside Beach. The
downside is there is an 11p.m. curfew (definitely enforced!) and the
shuttle bus does not run after 6 p.m. If you still want to try it call
is 508-228-0433.
For those naturists who have been to the beach at Gay Head on Martha's
Vineyard or Truro, this will be another great option for your summer.
Give Nantucket a try. There are no traffic lights, lots of quaint
Quaker architecture, cobblestone streets, and great restaurants. See
you this summer!
