Hi All..

Just wondering if you can recommend any ambient / trance like noise projects.
Nothing too harsh. Just something atmospheric / interesting. If it's on yr
tape label and it's inexpensive, that's even better.

Thanks.

Sounds like just about everything Manifold does: www.manifoldrecords.com

For some reason ambient/etc. stuff isn't as grounded in tape-only releases
as harsh noise is. But Manifold stuff isn't too expensive (around $10-12 for a CD).

Artists I'd recommend? Maeror Tri, Totemplow, Hands To, Brume, Crawl Unit,
many others. Some of these guys do harsh stuff as well, so read reviews first.

speculum fight. i don't know if you're familiar with the band slug, but this
guy was the one of the bass players. very good. very ambient, minimal, and
very atmospheric. good stuff to put on when you're going to bed. i find a lot
of c.c.c.c. stuff to be fairly ambient too. it's intense, but it has a very
relaxing feel to it.

Check out Speculum Fight's "Highball" CD. Long, droning pieces too harsh to be
limped in the ambient scene; great listening for watching the news with the
sound off, or to act as background for some nasty reading. Got a copy in an
Ottawa store's used bins fot less than $8 and thought it a worthy buy.

How do you like working with those C100s? Do you do several short
pieces on them always? Do you ever do 50 min. tunes?

And on that subject, how frequently do you all use an entire side of a
tape for one tune? Or more time than that? I like to make really
long compositions, but today I got the idea of doing a series of
1-minute super harsh pieces. I also am thinking about a C5. A split
one, ha ha! (By the way, I posted a message about that a while ago.
Got no response... email me if you're interested.)

Just wondering if you all have any thoughts on different lengths of
times for noise pieces.

I got this tape by this guy Nihil at an Instagon show about two or
three years ago. It's called Water Stained Black, and pretty much
fits into the arrythmic-ambient/noise area. I think Instagon sells
these... (anyone know the url?)

As far as trance goes, what's that? Does it involve drums? My image
of it is ambient with virtually unchanging drums and a super pleasant
bassline with some sounds drifting in and out of it. With variations
of course. Am I right?

Commercially available C100s are usually just fine. I never use bulk
cassettes; they've improved somewhat, but, overall, the quality just isn't
there, and I'd just as soon not compromise for the sake of saving a buck
or two. (Of course, that's probably why I'm always broke, but that's
another matter...)

In this case, the length of tape was determined by the overall length of
the three pieces I wanted to use (the A side is just under 51 minutes
long; the B side, Sinistrata (not noise at all), totals about 48 minutes),
and by the batch of blank C100s I had that were otherwise going unused.

For quite a while now, most of the pieces I record (whether noise or not)
tend to be somewhere between 7 or 8 minutes and 15 to 20 minutes long.
It's been about a year since did anything longer than that.

Hardly ever. "Conduit #5" (on O b s e r v e Z e r o) was the last time I
used an entire side of a tape for one piece, and only because it's a
mostly ambient piece.

The longest thing I've ever recorded is "Heaven is a strange and wonderful
place", an ambient piece about two hours long - and that's really sort of
cheating, since it's a combination of two pieces against a unifying
background. At around that same time, I did work on another ambient piece
("Angel in heavy syrup") that would end up being three and a half hours
long if allowed to run uninterrupted from start to finish; in the end, I
only recorded 50 minutes of it.

I think it really depends on the nature of the piece, and on what the
intentions behind it are. Really long pieces only work well if you impose
some sort of structure upon it, or if you are trying to create atmosphere.
Otherwise, it's really easy to lose interest after a few minutes. As for
really short pieces, I think Masonna is - so far - the only one I've heard
who does them well. Shorter pieces without that kind of intensity are
rarely satisfying.
