This noise thing is in no particular tradition. Anytime someone says
something that tries to define noise, a bunch of other people pipe up
and say "nonononononono!!!" It's great.
Read alt.noise and look at all the webpages and order tapes from
people and shit. You'll get sucked in like nobody's business.

Personally I use whatever I can get my hands on. I'm sure a lot of
people are using computers nowadays. Mine's not fast enough. How
many people are using 4-tracks?

Well, send me tapes.

About 90% of my recording is done on a 4-track. I occasionaly
do boombox recordings when I don't feel like setting up the
4-track (I record all of my drone/noise/shoegaze bands rehearsals
that way), but the more serious stuff is usually 4-track done. I
only really use the PC for mastering and noise reduction
purposes.
Sometimes I will record to boombox (it's actually a high quality
AIWA analog tape deck, but the name boombox always
seems to stick with me) and then run that into the 4-track for
overdubs if I like what I hear. That seems to be the best of
both worlds, though generational loss is a consideration.

I am still using a Tascam PortaStudio 4-track for most of my
"at home" experimentation. It's a lot easier than using the
computer in a lot of ways, and besides... analog noise always
sounds so much warmer than digital.
(with the exception of "IBM" by Throbbing Gristle, but even
then it was recorded onto analog tape.)

DOH!! Hahaha, good point. No, what I do is filter out the
tape hiss if I am going to burn some of my work to CD. Seeing
as I rarely (well, never) burn my noise pieces to disc, no worry.
My more My Bloody Valentine inspired material is all I usually
burn to disc, with the exception of the musical project that is
currently taking up all of my time, the drone/noise/shoegaze
stuff of Slumbersigh.

it's really fun to sample some Merzbow/Masonna/whatever in Cool Edit and
then put noise-reduction on it :) ...the track is not erased, it becomes
more like, eh, hm, computer-buble-canned, ehm or something, not harsh,
but it sounds cool, I can't explain it, just try it :)

Do you plan to release any of this stuff soon? Noise and shoegaze/dreampop
are my primary listening (along with Indian classical/ghazals and early Kraut
space/prog) and I'd be interested in hearing how you combine 'em (although
certainly early JaMC, MBV, and occasionally stuff like Loveliescrushing skirt
that territory...).
