If you can play other sounds, soundfiles, etc., then that part is
working.
Try the recorder to see if you can record your own voice.
Also your soundcard specs will say what functions it supports, but I
would imagine there is nothing wrong with your soundcard. If you can
record and playback your own voice, that would prove that part to be
working.
Maybe check what you have plugged into the line-in, and mic, sockets on
the card as well.
Also in your volume control, soundcard control panels, programs, see if
there is any advanced settings section. And I think there is a
multimedia controlpanel item that has various choices and settings.
Maybe you have a custom sound control application for your soundcard as
well.

Linux has some pretty sweet internet connection sharing. We've used it here
at work for over a year with zero problems. It does all the major
protocols - http, ftp, icmp, etc as well as modules for handling ICQ, Quake,
and videoconferencing connections.
