Is it possible that you're running Zone Alarm or some other firewall
program? I've found that while using some of these internet phone services
I must temporarily disable Zone Alarm or the person I am calling can't hear
me and I can't hear them. However, I have already tried calling myself
using the new MSN Messenger upgrade and it seems to work fine.

Are you sure you have version 3.0 (0283)? I have Zone Alarm and a second firewall
and granted MSN Messenger permission to make phone call, and my phone feature has
worked perfectly for hundreds of calls, as it does for all my friends. Also you know
you have to dial 1 and then the area code and then the number, you must have your
sound card microphone turned on, many old sound cards are not supported. I would
test your mike speakers and earphones on our sound card before you try to use the
phone feature. Does your sound card support Media Ring?

i would not believe it's because i have something old. It's a brand new
computer, with a sound blaster 512 pci, cheap microphone but still enabled
in volume control . The only thing i hear in my phone is when I press
numbers on the messenger keypad - i hear them on the phone. But no voice,
in either way : pc to phone or phone to pc.......
and i have the 0283 version...

It might be possible that when you press the numbers on the messenger
keypad, that the software and the modem are involved. This works. You
made the call, which also proves this to be working. But as for the
voice it involves the soundcard and drivers obviously, so all I can
suggest is that there is some problem in the soundcard, mike, speakers,
area.

If you can play other sounds, soundfiles, etc., then that part is
working.
Try the recorder to see if you can record your own voice.
Also your soundcard specs will say what functions it supports, but I
would imagine there is nothing wrong with your soundcard. If you can
record and playback your own voice, that would prove that part to be
working.
Maybe check what you have plugged into the line-in, and mic, sockets on
the card as well.
Also in your volume control, soundcard control panels, programs, see if
there is any advanced settings section. And I think there is a
multimedia controlpanel item that has various choices and settings.
Maybe you have a custom sound control application for your soundcard as
well.

Good luck with it,

I have version 285 of MSN Messenger and 2.1.25 of Zone Alarm (medium
security) and am having the same problem. I have checked my speakers
and mic as well as with the tuning wizard. On a call, I can hear tones
from the Messenger key pad but no voice. Any more advice than has
already been posted would be appreciated.

I think I found why it doesn't work. It's because I share my internet
connection, so I'm in a network of 2 computers (i'm the host). I have tried
calling while using the other computer directly connected to internet
(without relying on the connection share) and it worked fine. As soon as I
try to call while using the ICS, it does not work anymore....
Fucking Microsoft....
ICS is already bad, but now some programs can't work with it....

Linux has some pretty sweet internet connection sharing. We've used it here
at work for over a year with zero problems. It does all the major
protocols - http, ftp, icmp, etc as well as modules for handling ICQ, Quake,
and videoconferencing connections.
Check it out. Hey - it's free - what have you got to loose?
Might even learn something...
