Have a small office network running Win98. All computers can access all
files on all other computers. Have attached a printer to one computer and
sharing so all computers in group can share and use. Printer will work for a
while then starts showing error message. Error is ( There is a error writing
to \\lindag\hp5 for printer ( Hp Laserjet 5): There was a problem printing
to the printer due to an unknown system error. Restart Windows and then try
to print again. This printer will be set to work offline. To save your print
job in the local printer queue, click ok.). This will happen with both
printers HP Laserjet 5P and 6P. I can change printer to another computer. It
will work for a while then you start getting the same message. Once a
computer stops printing due to this error message you can not reattach it
again to the same computer to get it to print. Office is running out of
computers. Printer drivers are of course loaded from Windows not from OEM
disk or CD. Restarting WIndows is no help. The network protocol for intranet
is Netbuei for Internet it is of course TCP/IP. These are Dell computers
with 700MHz Intel Celerons with 128 MB of RAM. WIth a built in NIC on
motherboard. All configurations are correct for printer and computers. I
have downloaded OEM print drivers for both printers, but haven't gotten back
to office to install to see if that maybe the problem. Can anybody tell me
what the unknown system error is and how to fix problem. Thanks for any help
you can give. Theo

>Thank You Eric

I have checked and read this page three times there is nothing there to help
me with this problem.
I have reinstalled OS. Loaded OEM Print Drivers and the problem keeps coming
back after about a day or day and a half. I have also removed TCP/IP from
the host computer so there would be no conflict with protocols by just using
Netbeui and vice versa that didn't help. I 'll start from scratch again.
Starting with the port configuration trying normal first then ECP then EPP
then ECP and EPP with a DMA Channel. Disabling bi-directional support, print
directly to the printer without spooling. I'm at a loss with situation. Do
you have any other suggestions. Theo

Sorry I dont have anything much to offer but with HP I cant get ECP to work
long term but Bi Directional is trouble free
I have also found that the discussion group on the HP site can be very
helpful and seems to provide answers most of the time
Make sure that you are using the appropriate HP drivers and uninstall
drivers before reinstalling any new ones

Theo,

I and others are fighting the exactly same problem. We've got a thread
going over in comp.os.ms-windows.networking.windows called "Yet Another
problem printing due to an unknown system error" where we're trying to
figure it out. Anyway, I've found other folks in at least 6 other
groups with this same issue. I'm posting this in all the threads
I've found to try and get all of us in one place to figure it out.

Per advice received in the thread mentioned below, the fix is to delete
the *.spl
files in the C:\windows\spool\printers folder. This (0 KB spl
files) is a problem known by McAfee to be caused by ActiveShield, and an
update in the as-yet-unspecified future will have this corrected so it
doesn't re-occur. Meanwhile, any time the printing trouble comes back
it's a relatively minor thing to go delete the spl files again.
