I think that all these positions are ridiculous to the extreme and
they have, in fact, being ridiculed in the news media as well.

However, there is a more disturbing trend ongoing. Gruevski is
working hard to portray Greece as the villain within FYROM and stoke
the flames of nationalism. It is an old method, used by the original
Macedonist to explain some facts on the ground. For example, how come
there are few if any "dedicated Macedonians" in Greek Macedonia? The
Macedonist explanation is that there were "vast expulsions of
Macedonians" and the settling of Asia Minor refugees and southern
Greeks as well as extensive "brain washing" and "assimilation" of the
remaining natives.

Now, Gruevski is beating the drums that Greece is trying to destroy
the ethnic consciousness of the "Macedonians". Not a word, of course,
of how all this affects the Macedonians of the Greek province. The
amazing thing is that the Greek political establishment, preoccupied
with its usual strife for power, is allowing him all the latitude he
wants. Instead of countering hard Gruevski's silly and dangerous
propaganda, the Athens establishment (and it includes all parties)
have managed to stick its collective head up its ass. The Greek
public is seriously bemused. In fact, putting together the votes of
the two major parties in the recent election, one gets less than 70%
when only a decade ago, they accounted for >82%. My guess is that in
the next general election, both ND and the socialists would fail to
form a government leading to stupid coalition politics and further
deterioration of the foreign policy.

You obviously do not object into posting in threads with "insulting"
titles. I think that the content is what is important, not the title
of the thread which anybody can change. If I were not posting in
"insulting titles", I was not going to be posting at all.

by Greece in the past two hundred years has been because the west felt Greece
was really a part of Russia. The Greeks have to break free. Greece cannot be
both part of the West and the East. It must reject the East once and for all.
Even when Byzantium reigned, the Slavs were a nuisance and made Greece suffer.

Wow, another crazy.....!! In fact, in 1918 - 1919 Greece send an
expeditionary force of 24.000 men to fight the Red Army in Crimea with
the result that Lenin and the Red Army send supplies and artillery to
the rebel Turks under Kemal Ataturk to repel Allied control over
Anatolia!!

Greek relations with Russia have always been rather stand-off-ish
despite the fact that the Russo-Turkish war of 1828-29 contributed a
lot to the Greek independence. Greece sided with Russia during the
Crimean war but purely out of self interest because it wanted to
liberate Greek areas under Ottoman control. The Anglo-French blockade
put an end to this. Subsequently, the Greek royal family got more and
more aligned with the monarchies of the Central Powers and, in fact,
Crown Prince Constantine (later Constantine I) had extremely close
ties with the Kaiser (which ended up being a great disaster for
Greece). Constantine had to be expelled prior to Greece joining the
Entente Cordial. The rest is history.

It is amazing how even simple history can be twisted by fanatics.

Valotres and Comnie's obtuse archive shows how the West loved Greece
but only pulled away because Russia was too close. And Russia wanted
the straits for itself. The only Greece Russia ever tolerated was one
that was a part of Russia. Throughout the 1800s the West saw Turkey as
subservient to Russia. A lot of good that did to Greece. And the West
considered Athos to be the Russian Gibraltar. That's why the Junta kept
trying to close Athos, because it was, and still is, a soviet spy base.

The Greeks need to kick Russia in the shins and ask EU/NATO for
economic control of the Black Sea. All these Slavs do is keep sucking
Greece into their filthy muddy obschina like quicksand. Bovine

I like the fact that the zealots were communists!!! I guess that Marx
and Engels has traveled back in time and formed a communist party
there!!! I also enjoy the fact that Gregory Palamas was a Russian
agent considering the fact that there was no Russian state at that
time and whatever had been left standing was under the control of the
Golden Horde. All the rest are such a gamish of stupidities or
lies.

Hesychasm played an important role but it was certainly not oriental
(as Gregory Palamas lived in Thessaloniki!!) nor demonic. But one
needs far saner minds to discuss such issues.

Russia must re-focus with post-imperial eyes

President Barack Obama should have three central goals in mind when he
meets Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin
next week: first, to advance US-Russian co-operation in areas where our
interests coincide; second, to emphasise the mutual benefits in handling
disagreements between the two countries within internationally respected
"rules of the game"; and third, to help shape a geopolitical context in which
Russia becomes increasingly conscious of its own interest in eventually
becoming a genuinely post-imperial partner of the Euro-Atlantic community.
Of the three, the first is the easiest; the second is sensitive but needs
to be faced, lest there be repetitions of what happened last August, when
Russian troops invaded Georgia; and the third can only be sought indirectly -
but the effort has to be strategically deliberate. In any case, it is evident
that both countries would benefit from better relations. Fortunately, the
financial crisis has made the Russian elite aware that, for the first time in
its history, Russia's well-being depends on the well-being of the outside
world and especially of America. That reality of inter-dependence creates a
felicitous setting for the summit.
Moreover, on some important issues collaboration is not only possible, but
mutually beneficial. That is especially true with reciprocal reductions in
nuclear weaponry, a compromise on US plans for an anti-ballistic-missile
shield and joint efforts to enhance the nuclear non-proliferation treaty ,
among other security arrangements.
Unfortunately, on Iran, it is uncertain that the conventional wisdom -
which asserts that Russia genuinely wants to be helpful - is correct. To the
Russian leadership, the two long-term challenges to its power come from the
US and China. Both countries would suffer grievously, while Russia would
greatly benefit, if a US-Iranian crisis triggered a surge in energy
prices. Hence Russian willingness to be helpful may be more formal than real.
Nor should one ignore the reality that there are serious - though not
war-threatening - geopolitical conflicts of interest between the US and the
Russian Federation. The bottom line is that Mr Putin resents and wants in
some fashion to reverse the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Gaining
control over Ukraine would restore in effect an imperial Russia, with the
potential to ignite conflicts in Central Europe. Subduing Georgia would cut
the west's vital energy connection (the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline) to the Caspian
Sea and to Central Asia. Azerbaijan then would have no choice but to submit
to Moscow's control.
Indeed, in the summit meetings, Mr Putin and Mr Medvedev will be looking
for signs that the new US administration disowns the charters on partnership
with Ukraine and Georgia signed by former President George W. Bush. Even an
unintentional signal to that effect would be seen as a green light for more
muscular Russian actions against these two countries.
Hence a frank discussion is needed to lay down some mutually accepted
"rules of the game". The US can indicate that Nato membership is not imminent
for either country, but that the US and Russia have to respect Ukraine's or
Georgia's right to make that choice. In the meantime, Russia must understand
that the use of force or promotion of ethnic conflicts to destabilise Ukraine
or Georgia would poison American-Russian relations.
Clarity on these matters, achieved through respectful but realistic
discussions, would reduce the risks of Russia trying to restore an imperial
system in the space previously occupied by the Tsarist empire and then the
Soviet Union. Gradual consolidation of the existing national pluralism in
that space would accelerate the fading of historically futile imperial
ambitions.
Using the Moscow visit to identify America's vision of the future with
Russia's own but still partially repressed democratic aspirations should be
part of the summit ritual. Presumably there will be some chance to convey
that message, either through a speech or gesture to honour the many (and
currently in Russia ignored) victims of Leninism-Stalinism. That would also
help shape a political context for Russia's evolution towards a genuine
partnership with the world of democracy.
A final point: the previous US administration favoured trivial
personalisation of its relationship with Russia (such as references to Mr
Putin's "eyes" or "soul") and highly over-stated claims of breakthroughs
("the best relationship ever" between the two countries). A more serious
strategic approach that produces Russia's acceptance of its new post-imperial
realities and encourages its democratic evolution is more likely to yield
enduring results, while not unleashing unrealistic public expectations.

The "important" part of "None Dare Call it Conspiracy" is the idea
of the non-conspiracy conspiracy. That people sharing the same
logical presuppositions, consciously or not, tend to reach similar
conclusions. E.G. if you believe that a bigger government is necessary
to solve problems, then you have a natural ally in those who agree
with you, be they of the "Left" or the "Right": you both agree with
the premise: bigger government is good.
And so on. Those who believe in the True Presence of Christ in
the Bread and Wine of Communion, will come to similar conclusions
about how communion is to be done. Those who believe it to be a
memorial service of some kind, will wind up tossing back a shot glass
of grape juice and a bread ball once a quarter if they can fit it into
the schedule.
