Hyderabad (Agencies) - The Toyota-Qualis in which the
assassinated Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Raj Minister A
Madhav Reddy travelled at the time of the landmine
explosion at Ghatkesar on Tuesday night had helped the
PWG Naxalites to target the minister with pin-point
accuracy.
Being a new model car, it made a decisive difference as
the remaining two cars in the convoy were Ambassadors,
Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police H J Dora, who
was among the first to reach the spot, told reporters
here on Wednesday.
The shuffling of cars would have helped in dodging the
attackers if the car, the minister occupied, had also
been an Ambassador, he said, adding the make of the
vehicle made all the difference.
The minister, who was campaining in the same Toyota-
Qualis for the past 15 days for Thursday's municipal
elections, borrowed it from a TDP MP.
The Naxalites used the precision of the landmine blast
with "deadly accuracy'' and the headlights of a Maruti
van trailing the minister's convoy might have helped the
extremists in identifying Mr Reddy's vehicle.
The police chief said the extrmists used two buckets full
of gelatine sticks weighing 100 kg in setting off the
blast. He said the extremists might have planted the
landmine two to three months ago.
Another notable feature was that the extremists for the
first time, had chosen to trigger a landmine during night
time.
It was obvious that the minister's movements were
conveyed to the extremists waiting at the site to set off
the landmine.
Replying to a question, Mr Dora said that last night's
blast was not the handiwork of a dalam but that of a
specially constituted team.
As usual, the advance parties which normally search for
explosives on the route of a minister had failed to
detect the landmine this time as they were buried about
six ft below the kutcha road.
Mr Reddy was in Z-plus category and was on top of the hit
list of the PWG, which had been issuing statements in the
past that he would be targetted.
The DGP said the incident has no connection whatsoever
with the proposed visit of US President Bill Clinton to
the State later this month.
Such violent acts by the PWG would not strengthen its
movement in any way and would not not affect the morale
of the police force in the State, he added.
