Friday night we went out for a meal at a lovely pub that DH had
discovered on his way home from work. The food was excellent. I had
duck in a redcurrant sauce and DH had chicken in (IIRC) a cajun sauce
of some variety.
Saturday we got up late and headed out on a few errands. First stop
was the Citreon garage, to have a look at the new model thats replaced
our one. DH had seen it during the week and was raving about it. My
opinion - its very nice but is too big. I'd never get into the
multistorey carparks in town in it! Our next car will have to be
second hand in any event.
After that we headed for the legendary Hooty's. We'd never been but
everyone at work raves about it. Whenever I ask what it sells, they
just say "everything". This is about right. The it was on to B&Q
(giant DIY place) for some extra wide cable trunking and other bits
and pieces.
Saturday night we had a night in and I watched a Ground Force NZ
marathon, which was quite funny for me, but which DH was completely
flumoxed by!
Sunday was a slow start, but DH eventually got going with the major
DIY task of the weekend - finally installing the shower. Meanwhile I
did a roast dinner.
Monday morning I went out to B&Q again for some bits we had forgotten
(and to return some things we already had). I also got some sticky
back plastic stuff that converted a clear window to frosted - Vicky
talked about it here a few months ago and I decided to do the bottom
of our kitchen window, because we have caught people nosing, since its
at ground level.
DH had got on with putting the wiring through for the shower and
replacing all the cable trunking with wider stuff (there was already a
load from the bathroom and kitchen heaters - all the heating in our
place was retro-fitted). We couldn't put the pull switch on the
ceiling, because you drill about 1cm before you hit steel. So we have
a pull switch wall mounted inside the airing cupboard. Ah well it
works. The electric is now waiting for an electrician to come and
connect it to the mains.
DH and I did the plumbing - I was really frustrated because I used to
be really good at it, but no longer have the strength for tightening
compression joints, particularly at awkward angles. Anyway, it
doesn't leak, so I assume we've done OK.
After all that we figured we deserved another pub meal- so headed to
our local with a friend. Turned out to be a cheap night. I got to
the last quarter of my salmon fillet to discover that that bit wasn't
cooked, so I returned it. They were really apologetic and refunded my
money and gave me a free drink as well.
So that was our weekend... I'll be posting separately for decorating
advice since the bathroom needs it now!!

Me too :-) We didn't do much as I'm still not up to 100% after last week's
bout with the flu. I am feeling mostly better but get tired very quickly.
We slept a lot and did a bit more work on the decorating... the only
exciting thing was Saturday night we went to see the Reduced Shakespeare
Company doing the Reduced Works of Shakespeare which was hilariously funny.

Yay! Did it work out OK? (I'm worried coz it'll be my fault if it doesn't
:-))

Its fantastic isn't it! I saw them a couple of times years ago in
London and keep meaning to see them again. I'll keep an eye out and
see if they are playing anywhere locally, as I assume this means they
are on tour again.

Yeah, it did - it was only a small window, 135cm x 30cm. Theres a
panel, then an opening window above it thats 135cm x 135cm. The top
bit I have a blind on, but the bottom doesn't, because for a start its
too close to the cooker, but also I have a utensils jar, some herbs in
pots, etc on the windowsill. So the sticky plastic was great for
preserving our privacy. We've more than once caught people (not kids,
the old folks!) standing outside staring in -goodness knows why, but
this will put a stop to it. We've got some voiles for the living room
windows as well, it'll be nice to be able to leave the curtains open,
but at the moment we don't because we're pretty sure they have been
"inspecting" from there as well (one commented how our laminate wood
floor must be cold underfoot, and you can only see that from standing
on the balcony, looking in!)
Me three :-).
Saturday: Got up early (for us), and drove into the city to meet
Stephanie and her DH. Parked the car in a multistory just behind
their hotel and went to pick them up. They're both so *tall* - Steph
is the same height as Mark and her DH is about 6'5"! DH and I both
needed coffee, so our first stop was Bewleys' on Westmoreland Street,
where people like James Joyce used to hang out. On up the street to
Trinity College, the Book of Kells and the Long Room, which had a
Gutenberg exhibition. Over the road to the Kilkenny Design Centre - I
was looking for earrings and Stephanie was looking for an Aran
sweater. Neither of us had any luck, but we had lunch there.
At that point Mark left us as he had some shopping of his own to do.
We went to Christchurch Cathedral and the Dublinia exhibition (a
recreation of Dublin between the 12th and 14th centuries). Mark
caught up with us while we were in the crypt of the cathedral (after
I'd missed his call because my phone was set on silence). We walked
through part of Temple Bar and saw the remains of part of the original
town walls, which were discovered during the excavations for an
appartment building. Across the river to Smithfield and the Jameson
Distillery tour (we had to do something for the guys <G>). After the
tour, Stephanie's DH took part in a whisk(e)y tasting session and
received a cert proclaiming him to be an assured "whiskey taster".
At this point, Mark and I had to leave because we had other plans for
the evening made for us. We walked back to Temple Bar and we pointed
them in the direction of our favourite restaurant (& their hotel). We
retreived the car after paying a fortune for all-day parking in the
city centre. I only realised yesterday that none of us took any
photos :-(.
We were expected to attend the rehearsal for BIL's w******, because
Mark is doing a reading. I won't go into too much detail about the
rehearsal, but I was the only one who knew who did what and when (&
I'm including the priest!). The bridesmaid couldn't attend, so I also
had to stand in for her. The bride's parents kept asking me if it all
brought back memories etc, and I just about stopped from telling them
that we were married in a civil ceremony which would *not* have
impressed :-).
After the rehearsal, the parents went in one direction and the rest of
us in another, to the nearest pub. One round of pub grub and several
beers later (for everyone else but me, cos I was driving) we left
early and came home.
After all that, Sunday was *very* lazy. The most exciting thing we
did was to go to the supermarket.
Yesterday, we went to the local mall to buy giftwrap and a card for
bil and fsil. We headed over to Mark's parents because they had
"invited a few people around". It was us, other bil, and mil's
sister, bil and niece for at least two hours! Finally, other people
started to arrive, including the happy couple. We handed over the
gift (now duly wrapped); thankfully they loved it (handblown glass
vase and bowl). We left at about 11pm, and there was no sign of some
others to move at that stage.
Today I spent any free time confirming cover for my classes for the
next two days which I have to take off because of the w****** and
preparing work for them. So I'm vaguely exhausted again, and I still
have to clean my shoes, fake-tan my legs etc before tomorrow morning.
