Today I had about six images to download. The first downloaded okay
into Folder-A. The second downloaded okay into Folder-B, but after that
I couldn't get anything to download. The "download manager" would show
that the file was downloaded, but there would be nothing in the folder
into which it was downloaded. Then, as I tried again and again on the
same file, even the Download Manager didn't show the attempt.
What's that all about?
Ed
I can't see any rhyme or reason to it. And this isn't the first time
it's happened. The previous time, a few days ago, I was able to get
things to work by shutting down my computer and restarting. I suppose
that will work again today, but it's still a problem if I can't depend
upon pictures downloading. I don't always check to verify that things
work. I assume that when I download a picture that it actually downloaded.
I know I can convert to Mozilla and all problems will go away, but is
there something I'm missing on this on 7.1? (I use XP.)
Ed
Remove everything in the Download Manager.
Doug,
Generally speaking, I remove everything from the Download Manager
whenever I complete my daily chores. So, I'm nearly always starting
with a blank sheet at the beginning of a day.
For me the Download Manager is just a pain in the ass. I don't see it's
purpose at all. All I know is that the first time I download something,
it pops up, so I have to minimize it to get rid of it until I'm done for
the day. Depending upon what I'm doing, I may clear it out several
times a day.
Ed
However, I still have to re-install Netscape every now and then for the
same reason - it simply stops downloading images, without explanation.
I reinstall, and it starts working again.
Close Netscape. Delete the file:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\components\compreg.dat

Hmmm. Okay. I'll try that as soon as I get up the nerve.
Ed
I deleted that file yesterday. Today there was only one image to
download and save, and I didn't have any problem with it. Nor did I
have any problem downloading the four .html statistics files I download
and save every day. But I didn't have problems every single time before
the change, so I don't know if the problem is fixed or not.
Ed
Okay, today I had lots and lots of images to download, and the problem
wasn't fixed by deleting C:\Program
Files\Netscape\Netscape\components\compreg.dat
I began the day with a blank Download Manager. I downloaded and saved 4
.hmtl files okay, and then 9 .jpg files. But on the 10th .jpg file, it
would not save. (These downloads were all from newsgroups.)
I found that by clearing out the Download Manager I could sometimes
download and save ONE file, but the next one wouldn't work. If I
cleared AND closed the Download manager, I think it would always allow
me to download and save ONE file but no more than one.
Fortunately, the newsgroup I was accessing at that time is also a
newsgroup on my backup news server - newsguy.com. So, I was able to
download the images via their "Direct Read" service. I.e., I accessed
the newsgroup via their WEB SITE where they provide thumbnails of all
the images on the newsgroups. When I downloaded that way, EVERYTHING
WORKED okay. In other words, the problem is in downloading and saving
from newsgroups via the mail programs, not via the Netscape browser.
Unfortunately, newsguy.com doesn't provide all the newsgroups I need to
access. But, fortunately, I have other programs to get the pictures via
my primary news server - giganews.com. I used NewsShark to download and
save all the pictures I needed.
But this is a problem I cannot live with. I need to know that when I
click on SAVE the image will really be saved.
Is there a fix? Does Mozilla have the same problem?
Ed
I've never experienced that problem, whether it be Netscape or Mozilla.
You could try enabling Pipelining.
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> HTTP Networking.
[x] Enable Pipelining
Okay, but first I'll have to do some research to figure out what
"pipelining" means.
And I'll also do some experimenting to see if I can more accurately
define the exact nature of the problem. Yesterday the problem began the
first time I had a very large file to save. That may just have been a
coincidence, but who knows?
One odd thing I notice: Right now I have 4 .html files listed in the
Download Manager - and it's supposedly sorted by Time. Yet I can see
that the items are NOT in the order I downloaded them this morning. AND
I've noticed that - when the problem begins - there always seems to be
one item at the bottom of the list that really belongs at or near the top.
Hmm. I just examined those 4 items and what I see is that the first
item I downloaded is listed LAST. The other three are in order. I'll
bet that that's a situation that happens all the time. And it could
have something to do with why - once the problem starts - I can't
download and save more than one file without the problem returning.
Ed
Try this:
With Netscape 7 closed, delete the downloads.rdf file in your profile's
SLT folder and the Cache folder, empty your C:\Documents and
Settings\*user*\Local Settings\Temp folder and Recycle Bin.
Wow. I'll have to check out whether or not I can even find all that
stuff. (I cleared out the Recycle Bin while preparing this message.
There was very little in it. I expected to find all the files for the
old profile I deleted when I last converted, but they weren't there.)
I'm done for today, and the problem didn't occur. I began by
downloading 4 .html files and then downloaded 12 .jpg files. 16 files
downloaded and saved with no problem. The only unusual thing I noticed
was that the first .html file I downloaded was always listed LAST in the
Download Manager. Everything else was in order.
I thought for certain I'd have a problem when I downloaded and saved an
image - say xyz.jpg - and then a few moments later I found a better copy
of that image. So, I renamed what I'd previously saved to xyz1.jpg and
then saved the better version as xyz.jpg. It worked okay, although
Download Manager only showed one copy of xyz.jpg being saved.
No unusually big files today.
Ed
Hmmmm. I haven't yet done the latest attempt at a fix, but today I
learned something new about the problem. It appears that after the
problem starts - and today it again started with a large picture - I can
still download and save files, but I have to save each one TWICE.
Today, each time I tried saving it a second time it always worked. And
it seems to download the file a second time when I saved it the second
time. I mean, when I looked at the Download Manager it showed that
striped bar which indicates something is downloading.
I cleaned out the Download Manager list several times before I realized
what was happening. The next time it happens, I'll see if I just have
to start downloading everything twice and clearing the Download Manager
has nothing to do with anything. And I'll see if it starts with a big
file again.
Ed
The problem definitely seems to have something to do with large images.
I downloaded and save over thirty pictures from newsgroups with no
problem, and then I got to a large image (700K, .7 Meg) and the SAVE AS
didn't work the first time. But it worked okay the second time.
But from that point on, I couldn't save ANYTHING from newsgroups no
matter how many times I tried.
I hadn't cleared out the Download Manager up until that time, so I
cleared it. But it didn't do any good. No did closing it after
clearing it. I couldn't SAVE anything.
And after I downloaded the pictures with NewsShark instead, I went to
another newsgroup where there were a few more small-ish pictures to
save. I still couldn't save anything with Netscape. I had to download
and save those with NewsShark, too.
So, I guess I'll try the suggestion later today - although it seems like
some kind of temporary fix (or maybe just an idea that may work or may
not work.) This is the suggestion:
>>>> Try this:
>>>> With Netscape 7 closed, delete the downloads.rdf file in your profile's
>>>> SLT folder and the Cache folder, empty your C:\Documents and
>>>> Settings\*user*\Local Settings\Temp folder and Recycle Bin.
Ed
Deleting the downloads.rdf file was no problem. And I also deleted the
Cache folder. And I can empty the Recycle Bin.
But I don't know how to "empty" the C:\Documents and
Settings\*user*\Local Settings\Temp folder
I see it's got a lot of .tmp files in it, but there are lots of other
files in it, too.
How do I empty this "Temp" folder? Do I just delete everything with a
.tmp suffix?
Ed
I regularly delete everything in the \Local Settings\Temp folder. Or
run Disk Cleanup from the C drive's Properties window.
Okay, I just ran Disk Cleanup and it seems to have gotten rid of nearly
all of what was in the Temp folder.
So, now we'll wait and see if it solves the problem. I didn't have the
problem this morning, but I didn't have any large images to download and
very few images in total.
Thanks.
Ed
This morning, I just had a few files to download, but some were large
files. I downloaded the 4 regular .html files I download and save every
day, and then I started downloading images from newsgroups. The fifth
image would not save. A second try didn't work, either. Nor did
attempts on other files. There are no error messages; the files just do
not appear in the folders. I finally had to use NewsShark to download
and save those files. Fortunately, there weren't many today.
So, any other suggestions?
I do notice one consistent "error". The first thing I download and save
will always appear last on the listing.
If you want to see what the Download manager looked like when I was
done, it's here: http://member.newsguy.com/~detect/Netscape1.jpg
The notes in red are mine, of course, as is the comment about the last
entry being "the first download of the day".
Ed
If I was having your problem, I would ...
Create a new Netscape 7 profile and see if it had the same problem.
or
1. Download the offline installer for Netscape 7.1 or Mozilla 1.6.
2. Backup my profiles in the C:\Documents and
Settings\Douglas\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles folder.
3. Follow the advice for uninstalling Netscape 6/7 and Mozilla at
http://www.ufaq.org/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=138
4. Delete my C:\Documents and Settings\Douglas\Application Data\Mozilla
folder.
5. Install Netscape 7.1 or Mozilla 1.6, not both.
6. Run the program and create a new profile.
If Netscape Communicator was still installed, I'd rename the nsreg.dat
file in the Windows folder until after installing 7.1 or Mozilla and
creating a new profile.
Ed
Looking around, I found this:
When it is time to clean up messages: Click one of the three choices to
specify when newsgroup messages should be deleted. Unless you choose
"Keep all messages," enter the number of days to keep messages or the
number of newest messages to keep.
The default was set to "Keep All Messages". I set it to "keep messages
for 30 days". Saving all messages on newsgroups seems like a LOT of
messages.
Ed
As far as I know, if you don't download newsgroup message bodies for
reading while offline, those settings don't do anything.
Well, it certainly didn't solve the problem. Today I only downloaded
and saved 7 files before the SAVE AS function stopped working. And none
of the files was particularly big.
If I get time later today, I'll try setting up a second profile.
Ed
The settings do work and have effects, even if you dont download messages for offline use. For example, if you have a news server set to 5 days 'keep' the headers are likewise removed after such time. You wont see all the headers extant in the group (on the server) if your limit is lower.

I also realized something about what happened yesterday. I VIEWED a
very large image (but didn't save it) just before the SAVE AS function
stopped working. So, I think DOWNLOADING large images causes the
problem, not the saving of them. And since it only happens with
newsgroups and not with downloading from web sites, maybe it is a space
problem with how much I keep for newsgroups. I'll change the setting to
14 days. Thanks.
Ed
Okay, I noticed something new today.
I've got a program called "YProxy" installed which allows me to view
Yenc images. I didn't have any problem with YProxy under 4.7, but there
definitely could be a problem with it under 7.1.
Today I wasn't able to save SOME large Yenc images, but when I moved on
to some other newsgroups where the images weren't in Yenc, I was
suddenly able to download and save images again.
That probably means that reinstalling or trying a different Profile
won't help.
I'm going to experiment a bit to verify that Yenc is the problem. The
easiest experiment would be to see if Netscape 7.1 handles Yenc images
all by itself. If so, then simply not starting up YProxy should solve
the problem. I don't see any entries under Y in the Help index.
Ed
Thanks for the help, though.
Ed
Hmmm. I thought I had it. I checked an image that I thought was Yenc
coded and it looked okay, but when I tried other images they wouldn't
decode.
So, the problem COULD BE with YProxy, but I evidently still need to run
YProxy. So, I'll have to continue researching the problem.
