Moving from Netscape 4.7 to 8.0 and finding bully tactics and no email client

I've just downloaded Netscape 8 and despite saying I didn't want
desktop weather (it wouldn't accept my UK postcode anyway) I got the
download forced on me. It also tried to force me to accept
installation of the weather by not accepting cancel. Somehow I
managed to get out of it. I don't know who is running Netscape now but
it seems like a bully.

Now I've got it, it doesn't seem to have any email, which was the
main reason for the download. I will need to access my old emails on
the new computer. Also, with Explorer I can't just look at emails sent
but need to download emails first, which I don't want to do. I'm
currently using Netscape 4.7 for email and browser on my old computer
and have downloaded Netscape 8 to the new computer using Microsoft
Explorer. Does Netscape 7 still have an email client? I tried to
download this from the UK site but it came up with an error. I tried
the link that said download 7.2 from the US site but this turned out
to be 8.0.

It was to be only an easy temporary solution until I moved to a
separate email client, which looks a long job, given that Eurdora said
that no email program met my spec.

Any suggestions and explanation please?

Thanks for taking the time with such an informative reply Arno,

It hadn't occurred to me copy over my Netscape 4.7 currently running
under Windows 95 on my old computer to the new computer running XP.
This was probably because I've had problems with only being able to
send three emails without getting a blue screen and also the browser
hanging. It could be that Windows 95 needs reinstalling or Netscape or
both or a virus. However, as I was trying to avoid spending time on
the problem by escaping to a new machine, putting in a new (later)
version of Netscape on the new computer and importing the files from
the old one and then doing a virus check, seemed the cleanest
solution. Although I did have a look for an export facility in
Netscape 4.7 and couldn't find one.

Now I've found bookmark.htm, which is the book file as you rightly
indicated. The mail seems to be in the folder users/vlilley/mail. So
it looks as if I could just copy these files over to the new machine
without having to worry about an export facility.

I notice you still have Netscape 4.75. I wondered why? So presumably
Netscape 4.7 does run Windows XP? So a short term solution to get my
email going, while I'm deciding on a new email client would be to do a
new install of Netscape 4.7 under XP on the new machine and overwrite
the bookmark file and the mail folder with what I will copy over from
the old computer.

I'll take your suggestion and move to Firefox and subscribe to that
webgroup. Also I'll look into Agent and Thunderbird as possible email
clients. I'm actually using Free Agent for newsgroups, perhaps this is
related to the Agent for the email.

Thanks again,

Vic,
from what I've seen so far with Netscrap 8.x there is NO reason to
have it. You can't build websites, view Newsgroups, E-mail, view
personal Toolbar folder... In short it's about as worthless as you can get.

My suggestion... stick with 4.7 as this was the last REAL multitasking
browser that was at least stable.

The ONLY thing good about 7.x is the tab browsing. Everyone & their dog
offers better pop-up blocking & Junk Mail controls.

As Netscape is now an AOL company don't expect a 4.7 quality product
this lifetime.
