They apparently thought the "Distributrion: internal" header
would prevent it from getting outside of AT&T. Like that guy
way back when who was testing the "create a newsgroup" program,
and thought he'd restriced "alt.swedish.chef.bork.bork.bork"
to his own news server.
Oopsie.
It seems clear that the intent was that only that subset of
AT&T customers who read Usenet would see it. Actual results
.. could have been better.

Some of us didn't see anything until your post, probably because someone
at AT&T saw that the original post got out and canceled it himself, or a
cancelbot canceled the original post.

What was the intent (and whatever happened to) of all those consecutive
alt. groups that formed "ATT YOU WILL" in banner letters? Were those
only on Netcom's servers?

That was a rhetorical question.
Who called this meeting?

The Net Abuse FAQ
<http://www.cybernothing.org/faqs/net-abuse-faq.html>
4.8) Hey, there's this (AT&T, Jerry Garcia, whatever) banner
message in the newsgroup descriptions!
We know, we know... It's a fairly common prank to add bunches of
newsgroups whose descriptions spell something out. Ask your local
news adminstrator to remove the whole lot.

Some guy at AT&T, I think.
It's nice to see some of the old netcom crowd are still subscribed
to this group after all these years. My old m...@netcom.com address,
alas, finally went away when I dropped Earthlink.

There're times when I think it would be more appropiate to call us
old netcommics.
Unless you're talking to the young ones, of course.

And still of sound mind... or as close to it as might have been possible.

Hard to realize that it's 18 or 19 years ago that I signed up with
netcom. And nice to see that so many of the old netcommies are still
around.
Did anybody ever get that Scots terrier pup that Bob McRieger was
offering---and is the dog still around?
