INTERVIEW WITH MYSELF AS COYOTE

Reverend Steven Johnson Leyba interviews Coyote on such controversial
topics as media manipulation, Revolution, visual sexual coercion in
capitalism, gun control and the NRA, human stupidity as a Christian
consumer precept, the death of Christianity, taking aesthetic vengeance
for his ancestors, the patriotic act of pooping on the flag, painting,
politics, traditionalism, Satanism and the absolute importance of
ritual.

REVEREND; Some disregard your work because it is
pornographic, angry and hostile. With so much animosity toward humans
how can you create anything for humanity?

COYOTE; It is a hostile world. People have a hard time dealing with
those that are direct and precise. No one can criticize culture If you
do you are betraying the herd. They (society) will have you believe
that it is undignified to criticize the dominant world culture. Artists
should be the first to speak out against oppression and censorship but
in this end of the 20th century artists will self censor to keep their
celebrity status.
Watch out if you shove the facts in anybodies’ face in America.
Unpopular views are political insurrections, treason even. Who has the
balls to tell an American Indian he ain’t American?
My work hits nerves. I am constantly being told by other artists to
“Tone down," “Take this out,"“Don’t say that†, “Leave the penises and
Vaginas out†, “Don’t use pentagrams - swastikas†and “Don’t be
political.†If I bowed and succumbed to the predominant mediocrity of
culture my work would just be ignored like 99 percent of all art.
I am angry and I let it show. I tend to be an emotional and
immediate animal but I am very rational with where I direct anger in
art. If I didn’t I couldn’t create anything, I could only destroy. My
anger is quantified and
eroticized. If I wasn’t precise and selective with my rage I would
simply
slip into criminality. Though with corporations taking hold in America
it
wouldn’t be an over statement to say art is being criminalized in the
“Land of the free.†In the 80’s advertisers used the sexual image for
coercion, to sell their products. Artists using the human sexual form
got arrested and fined. Major exhibits got closed down and curators
put on trial. The 90’s have been about artists selling out left and
right, ass kissing bullshit art with zero content and bad compositions,
bad form, no vision and no skill. The art critic Robert Hughes speaks
of “The suppression of skill†in the fine arts. It pisses me off when
advertisers are selling me a line of shit but when artists start doing
that it is propaganda! So even other artists can piss me off. Anger
fuels my artistic path. Rational anger with discipline is a very
productive and positive and powerful device. I am considered some
sort of traitor an Un- American because I turn anger into art. Just
because I simply believe Corporations are too powerful and Christianity
is like a lame comic book story for the dumb and scared. People should
respect me more, I am only a questioner of society after all I’m not
your Senator or President.

REVEREND; Respected more? You do paintings of guns in people’s
asses. You want more people to see this? Why? So they can start
murdering their fellow man by shoving a gun in a person’s very personal
orifice? Are you advocating sexual assault with firearms?

COYOTE; Am I responsible for another human being's actions?
Reverend, priests should not over simplify the issues of our mediocre
consumer culture because people see you as a spiritual authority. Some
people think my paintings are protests for more gun control. I am a
proud member of the NRA. I don’t want a police state, because, hell
even Larry Flynt wants a police state.
Sexual assault with a firearm? Well how about consentual gun
control? I think it is hot when my wife or lover shoves a fire arm in
my ass that is to me perfect “Gun Control.†Do I advocate murder? Well
historically artists have done this through taking part and suggesting
revolutions. I mean by shocking the people out of the brainwashing of
the ruling class and into action. I Would not lose sleep if a few
oppressed Americans snuck into the house of a CEO of a major
anti-environmental corporation and did a little gun play. Hey the next
major war on this planet will be on American soil in our lifetime. It
will be the “American Revolution II, the Sequel.†. When retribution by
sexy gun assault is inevitable sit back, relax and enjoy it. I mean,
in a revolution wouldn’t it be wonderful?

REVEREND; You're so ANGRY! Why do you insist anger is a good thing?
Is anger some sort of artists rocket fuel?

COYOTE; When something positive is created from something
harsh and negative we learn. In the context of History, have the
various
Revolutions been positive? Negative? Art is self expression. Art is
positive, no matter how nasty. When governments pass more laws about
self expression-a bloody revolution will be the only solution, because
art will cease to exist.
No way to express yourself? Why live? I do not create entertainment
propaganda, I try to project what is real with my work. What is real
often
times is painful. The painter Francis Bacon said, “ If anything is
strong
or real people think it is painful. All reality is pain.†In today's
society
the people that won’t think for themselves, the consumer cowed
followers are being protected from their own stupidity. In today's
society the weak minded are constantly being protected physically,
emotionally and intellectually. Stupid people make better consumers, a
simple fact. If anything is strong, direct, stern, angry it is called
being misdirected, unsophisticated, emotional and out of the realm of
good taste. Most people
want to avoid the pain that should cause personal action. Our life’s
pains
of various sexual, physical, intellectual and emotional realities are a
part
of the personal human experience and should demand human action and
introspection. Art should come from this.
Western society has a way of heralding stupidity and irresponsibility
as positive attributes. I attribute this to Christianity - a cultural
belief America pretends to believe in, in public. No one of
intelligence believes in the mythology of the bible in private. The
Bible was never meant to be taken literally, if this society respected
the poet biblical literalism would not be predominate in our judicial
system, government and corporations. Do you really believe president
William Jefferson Clinton is Baptist? Or that Bill cares about you and
me. Art is dangerous because it can be a threat to any controlling
society. So in America provocative artists must be attacked on a base
level. They must be accused of simply causing trouble to get attention.
The underlining realities are that art may express the need for change.
Art better be fucken dangerous. Picasso said it all, when he said,
“Art is never chaste, one should keep all innocent buffoons steered
well away. People who are not prepared well enough for art should never
be allowed near it. Yes, art is dangerous. If it’s chaste, it’s not
art.â€
It’s a pornographic, angry hostile world. We are all being taken
for a ride by the ever growing fascist “Corporate Industrial Complexâ€
(Corporations in control of the Government). Why does it have to be
that way? Why are artists in America so passive? Why do you people
still believe if we ignore the problems of society they will all
disappear? Why do you think that the big giant corporate government
and the media fear renegade artists? How can art ever be censored? I
mean, it is only art. Why do some government and corporate sponsored
galleries and museums feel the need to censor or silence me and my
work? I guess the truth still hurts. I will not ignore the facts.
Coyote chooses not to be a hermit. I live among my fellow environs.
You have to agree that there is room for improvements. I am not sorry
that my work tells you that you are human and you must take a shit!
Human experience should improve not diminish. I create for myself first
. If any of you pathetic creatures respond then there will be a
dialogue and no reason for rape and murder each other and the Mother
Earth. I create for self expression, if my art is worthless then stop
complaining about my political and sexual images. If my work is
controversial, obscene, etc. Then their is a dialogue that is being
created with the problem that has developed and change, not denial is
inevitable. That is why I create for humans I have contempt for and not
for plants. My Art is a simple obsession of Compassion born out of
hostility and anger. Cause I’m a rocket man!

REVEREND; You're an angry fuck who hates many things,
What do you like?

COYOTE; I like the desert, Naked people, pissing on people, getting
pissed on, pissing people off and bondage. I like sodomy with tools and
weapons - like hammers and loaded guns and once I fucked myself in the
ass
with a very sharp knife.

REVEREND; You are a sick fuck with all sorts of psychological
problems!

COYOTE; No I am not. I am a modern mythological trickster figure.
Besides I have a psychotherapist. I like spicy foods and like most
dogs I can eroticize excrement and eat it.

REVEREND; Do you like being pooped on? Do you eat other people’s
poop?

COYOTE; If the person is really sexy, Of course what dog wouldn’t?

REVEREND; Why do you shit on “Our Flag†of these United States of
America?

COYOTE; Because I am more American than most. I believe in what it
represents, not in the ugly bad abstract design constructed out of
nylon.
Americans worship the Flag. It’s a sick form of fetishism and idolatry.
Can’t salute yea, can’t find the flag. If that don’t suit yea, then
that’s a drag!

REVEREND; Do you believe America has an Indian curse on it? Are
Indians cursed also? Didn’t the confused media report a bizarre curse
you put on America?

COYOTE; Yes America is cursed. Nobody believes that the great
experiment called America is still great. Hey it’s still the greatest
experiment in History. In theory you gotta love it . In reality
millions
will soon leave it. The first Americans took care of this continent and
they cared about the next seven generations, not profit margins. I
cannot
tell you any congress person or corporate CEO really gives a damn about
me or you or future generations. This attitude comes from a self hatred
transferred to a hatred of the natural world and others. A Christian
Family tradition. Manifest Destiny. Divine right. Biblical.

REVEREND; Yes in the Bible the Jehovah (God of wrath and
vengeance) said that all of the nature is ours to use and abuse, rape
and destroy. Nature the enemy is ours all ours! Fuck the birds! Fuck
the trees!

COYOTE; Yes. From Christianity to corporate culture it has been a
sporting event that started with the missionaries enslaving Indian
people on this continent.
It is ironic that children kill children because Hopi and
Mayan culture predicts this. The obvious root of this evil is
overlooked by
the opportunistic media and the Christian clergy. Life’s meaning is in
dollars and cents? Ha? Children aren’t as stupid as we think. They
see the future and it is pointless. Capitalism is just a mechanism, a
tool not a religion! When I was a child, I was idealistic, not
materialistic. Plastic shinny ideals and stupid products didn’t give
me peace. Maybe America’s “Big Contradiction†is the real curse. We
worship youth because youth buys more bullshit product (sometimes) then
we silence their voice by dictated mandatory fashion. When children
bring guns to school to kill other kids, it is a curse. Was this
continent not stolen? With guns and God (religious Divine Right)?
Come on who the fuck believes that the American Indian was a bad guy?
Why do we lie to our children about the American Holocaust still?
This is the first time I have agreed with the Christian clergy,
these are
morally bankrupt times! Not because kids don’t believe Christian myth
is
real but because our culture only values money. Our government kills
for it, so why should children not lash out in rage? America has grown
powerful, arrogant and stupid! Children are true revolutionaries.
Those that live by the sword will die by the sword. Native American
culture may have been technologically primitive but they where
spiritually advanced. Those that insisted on the “Divine Right†of
taming the “Wild-erness†of North America by destroying it had no
spiritual balance. Young people instinctively know the lie of America.
The curse is simple, obvious and not merely supernatural. It is this
historical truth that we must deny to continue the myth of “American
Utopia†and progress. It is ironic when the truth is a lie and we
choose to believe the lie because it makes us comfortable. In America
there is no class, no racism? Anybody can say anything and do anything?
The American Dream is bullshit. Come on Consumerism is not a religion!
Capitalism is a shallow belief system! No one will ever make me
believe children are dumb enough to kill each other because of pop
music or because guns are available ( any 10th grade shop student can
make a gun with basic shop tools and gunpowder ). Children kill
children because they see the “Culture Trap†; they must accept a lie to
achieve success in society. Personal spirituality is considered
worthless when there is millions out there to attain. How can you put a
price tag on spirituality? You can’t, so in America personal
Spirituality is worthless. It must be purchased at a store from a
corporation, a Church, a rock star or an actor. Maybe children are
smarter than their parents, I mean instinctively.
Native Americans’ are cursed because we are to busy fighting among
ourselves to see the old saying “Divide and Conquer†only those that
have
given up have been conquered, whatever race. The Indians redeeming
quality are the application of rituals. The dominate white guy
corporate culture has obliterated all rituals and have replaced them
with consumerism, the one world religion. Personal ritual will be the
survivor skill needed to transcend the age of reason. The next century
will demand individuals to have personal rituals to give meaning to
their lives or they will simply be slaves to the corporate state.
On May 3rd 1997 I was asked to perform at a birthday party for
Jack
Davis. A political consultant that helped get the last two San Francisco
mayors elected. He was trying to pursued San Francisco politicians that
they needed to convince the public to pay for a new 49er football
stadium
and mall. It was a bad deal to begin with. Public funds should never be
used for sporting events. I put a curse on every politician at this
party, the stadium/mall idea, the mayor, the 49er team, and every
crooked politician or corporate asshole that has ever soled out the
people of this great land. The curse is working because the asshole who
owned the 49er football team has lost it and not a grain of sand has
been moved for this silly project. Curse these United states! , Where
no man (or Woman) is created equal to the mighty dollar! The media
described me as a “Performance Artist,†a “Lone Nut†a silly political
commentary. The fact that this curse has worked is obvious to anyone
who may want to accept the facts -not media propaganda.

REVEREND; What did you do to our constitution at that Jack Davis
party in 1997?

COYOTE; I wiped my ass on it. No , the media is so stupid they
thought the Declaration of Independence was the Constitution. I simply
read the first part of the Declaration of Independence and my curse,
“Invocation to Curse the Nation†- the prologue to the “Apache Whiskey
Rite†then I wiped my bloody back on it.

REVEREND; You're just a fucken asshole out to get whatever
publicity you can and your out to stir up controversy. What do you tell
people that say everything you do is only done to shock?

COYOTE; I tell them I do nothing merely to shock.

REVEREND; Bullballs!

COYOTE; I on the other hand am shocked, that in this jaded time
people can be shocked by art. This astounds me! It’s only art, right?
If I use images of sexual activity or genitalia, I use them to convey a
universal experience most of us people share, like having to crap. Why
is that shocking? If it wasn’t real, and if we didn’t know how it felt
out of experience then it wouldn’t be shocking.
There is value in shock; Shock Value. My work is controversial
because I deal with sex in both my handmade books and in my
performance. Sex and the sexual image is now the sole property of the
advertisers and the media, not the artist. I add to that controversy
when I put a political context into my work.
I was sodomized with a strap -on Jack Daniel’s bottle at
political consultant Jack Davis’s 50th birthday party. (Davis is a
consultant for both the mayor of San Francisco and the 49ers). I
performed a curse on the United States for revenge to honor my
ancestors of Native American blood. A pentagram was cut into my back,
because spilling blood is sometimes a way to honor mother Earth, to
give of yourself. I spoke of alcoholism and how it was used against
Native Americans and the problems we still deal with when consuming
alcohol. “Alcohol fucked up my family for seven generations, If alcohol
is going to fuck me, it’s going to fuck me in the ass!†, I said.
I was criticized for the shock this caused. I think the public act
of sodomy was a big factor in the controversy over “The Apache Whiskey
Rite.†It's all right if someone gets hacked all to hell as long as
they don’t get F’d in the butt. An “American Man†should never under
any circumstance admit to being sodomized, much less in public, in
front of city officials. I jeopardized the national security of
machismo. I was supposed to do this in an art ghetto like a non profit
performance space or better yet at an SM night club. I chose to do a
political performance in front of the Sheriff, the D.A., members of the
49ers and the movers and shakers of San Francisco politics. What
better way to speak to the public servants that make decisions that
affect my life? So I affected their life in return. I was supposed to
be a silly painted face clown, a token freak and instead I turned on
the politicians and became the Trickster Satanic Clown. As the
Nigerian trickster Edshu said, “ Spreading strife is my greatest joy."
Confrontation with context, that is art.
Why so graphic? so sexual? so bloody? so shocking? The press wanted
to know. In Native cultures the most sacred and powerful person of a
ritual is the clown. Clowns are not concerned with just laughs. It is
their job to challenge a complacent society, to turn the world upside
down. In Hopi tradition Clowns have been known to take a shit and eat
it or throw it at the spectators. There is documentation that some
clowns killed during ceremonies. Sometimes a male clown would sodomize
another male clown. I don’t think today's clowns hold that level of
freedom to shock. In white culture the trickster figures (sometimes
the Villains in movies) go and fuck shit up, but not to change the
world. They are concerned with keeping it the same. Sadly people are
taught through the media that change is a bad thing. That the villain
you love to hate is wrong, and things must always stay the same. That
goes against nature. Most Native rituals that can be seen by tourists
are frozen in the past. I feel tradition is not applied in a modern
context. Traditional culture is forgetting the Trickster’s mission. I
decided to aesthetically appoint myself as Satanic Clown. Native
Culture once used shock value as a sociopolitical tool to keep society
moving and changing. Clowning around is meant to be a mirror showing a
culture the horrors of complacent apathy. Never forget the
individual’s needs. American culture thinks individualism is something
that can be defined for everyone and sold as a commodity.
In Native mythology Coyote stories or Trickster stories were very
graphic- sexually and violently. Children where told stories by fire
light of Coyote burning his asshole shut because he didn’t like what it
was telling him. Coyote would accidentally eat his intestines. Coyote
would do something that seemed really stupid like get his head caught
in an elk skull and trick a hawk into flying up his ass. Coyote has
been known to shit and shit to reach the top of a tree. He may do the
most fucked up stupid shit but usually he ends up the Hero because he
has the instinct humans tend to lose.
The early Twentieth Century brought us strong and bold Trickster
artists that were not afraid to piss in public. Picasso, Dali -and
Duchamp signing a urinal and exhibiting it. These artists questioned
society and it’s direction. Artists forget that we can challenge
things and it’s all right to give the finger to the dominant mediocre
consumer culture. Shock is a technique like using detail in an oil
painting. It can be powerful in the right context or it could be a lame
way for the media to sell papers and keep society blindfolded, like the
over kill printing of details of the President fucking a woman with his
cigar. (Was that a diversion? How come so much more money went to the
military after that bread and circus?). Nietzche and LaVey speak of
the danger of joining “the Herd†of humanity and following mindlessly.
Carl Jung speaks of the Trickster as part of our ancient memory, our
instinct, a shadow figure in us all that cannot and will not be denied.
“ As soon as people get together in masses and submerge the individual,
the shadow is mobilized, and, as history shows, may be personified and
incarnated†, said Jung.
I do not believe in shock for shock’s sake or art for art’s
sake. Shock must have value, direction and intent. This I would say
to any critic. My controversies have given form to my experiments in
“Modern Clowning Around.†I have gained an audience and a platform,
which I am grateful for.

REVEREND; Can I become a Satanic Apache? How the fuck is your
Satanic beliefs, your heritage, and political activism put into your
art? Using the ethnic title is just another cheap shot “ARTWORLD†uses
to make those angry white males just a little more pissed off, Fuck you
Coyote!

COYOTE; No! You have to be born into this unlikely niche. First
you must have Apache blood, and I feel most Satanists’ are born
Satanists’. You know instinctively that darkness is part of the human
condition. You know spirits or nature are not out to get you, but
people might be. In living your life, horrible things will happen that
you must deal with. No God is gonna make it right-you are. Believing
that a God is going to do it for you is a self destructive and passive
state. Knowing your limits and being honest with yourself about your
mistakes is important to a Satanist.
The ironic thing is that I knew I was a Satanist before I knew I
was Apache. My grandfather thought he was Cherokee, and my father
didn’t know. I had to find out myself, because nobody else in the
family cared.
My books of paintings are sexual and sociopolitical. I learned
what role Christianity played in justifying the subjugation and murder
of Indian ancestors. I became enraged when I found out I had to seek
current family information through the Mormon Church records. The
Mormons had Navajo slaves, and the Book of Mormon still speaks of the
evils of dark skin tone - the mark of cane or some bullshit. Needless
to say, they didn’t teach my heritage in public school. They believe
Coyote stories are Satanic Rituals and still do.
I had just visited the Apache painter/activist Bill Warsoldier as
his spiritual advisor in a southern California prison. He convinced me
to take up arms with my art and not with guns like he had. He
encouraged me to go public with my Satanic beliefs. He had supplied
guns at A.I.M.’s siege at Wounded Knee in 1973 and has been in and out
of prisons ever since. He told me of his experience of having to go to
a Catholic boarding school where he was taught his culture was wrong.
Wild Bill pressed my button and I have been big and bold ever
since. My heritage is rich and my application of Satanism as aesthetic
sociopolitical revenge in my art is honest and true. I have history on
my side. Christianity has been very consistent in it’s atrocities. A
little bit of charity work has never made up for the indigenous
cultures lost forever, the inquisition, the missionaries that mixed
murder with God’s word and the random executions of abortion doctors
today. It is a pathetic travesty of justice that only a couple of
historians have tried to nail that beast to the cross. Critique or
indictment of Christian history is suppressed because Americans will
not come to terms with the reality of how this “free†country was
created. Also the herd mentality that dominates Christianity is a big
part of Capitalist Consumer Culture. I try to use the lessons of
history to ritually right the wrongs or at least point the middle
finger.
All this is part of my palette and not the whole picture. I know

even fit in that category. I have made many enemies both in the Indian
and white worlds. I have also made great allies that are not afraid to
die. I guess I don’t fit the stereotype of what an “Indian artist†is
(for Indians or Whites). I may be an American Indian and I may be a
Satanist but my work speaks of where I feel we are as a species. The
Genocidal Masters now use government, legislation, big business,
corporations, celebrities and the media to try and conquer us all. Why

COYOTE; No, I worship the Devil. Dr. Anton Szandor LaVey was a
visionary with a fierce defying philosophy who wrote the Satanic Bible
and started The Church of Satan. People try to discredit him now that
he is dead. He couldn’t have been serious! One local S.F. press
article tried to say he wasn’t a serious Satanist because he didn’t die
rich with a fat sack of cash under his bed. His ideas are still too
dangerous, even now that there’s so much Satanic Chic in the

discuss the philosophy -only the fashion. Like myself, LaVey was a

REVEREND; Your paintings have a mixed media of every thing
including the kitchen sink, where the hell does your technique come
from? Your always putting body fluids like piss, cum, shit, blood and
pubic hair in your paintings Why?

COYOTE; I think my medium has its roots in Dada and surrealist
sculpture. As a boy growing up I would find decomposing pornographic
magazines in the woods of Arkansas where people would drive deep into
the woods to dump all of their garbage. I witnessed ready made collages
of the human sexual form - impossible layers and combinations of
genitals and sex acts. This was very magical for me and of course
masturbating to these decomposing images wasn’t out of the question. I
wasn’t sexually active with anyone. I was shy and scared .I was
surrounded by Baptists that preached that sex was an awful act of
nature and only for making babies. I saved these ready-made collages,
brought them home but didn’t incorporate them in my paintings. It
wasn’t until ten years later in art school that I went back to the
human sexual form. I was bored in figure drawing class and would draw
the models as amputees. I always believed pornography could be
reinvented, and could be art. Why not? Sex is a human experience that
is barely explored in the arts. In art classes we had to take
photographic reference for paintings and copy it. I had done that in
High school and was bored with it. I felt like a slave to photography
and wanted it to be a slave to me. So I turned to collage, but for me
that wasn’t enough so I painted over the image. I had a really great
instructor, Baron Storey and he was already famous for his layering
technique. He encouraged me and had no problems with my nasty subject
matter. This all lead to my technique now- Oil Paint over Acrylic over
collage.
I take a large percentage of my own photographic reference. I will
take pictures of male and female sex parts or even my own sex parts (my
wife takes the pictures of my a-hole). This makes a painting more real
for me, though appropriation is never outlawed in my process. Sometimes
a mere photographic image isn’t enough for the under-painting so yes
I’ll put their pubic hair in it. I’ll even spill my blood or semen or
excrement into a painting to give it reality and power as a ritual
object. I love to sew beadwork into the paintings also. Indigenous art
and artifact has incorporated human hair and blood, piss, excrement and
semen into ritual masks and rattles and tools for thousands of years.
These objects are art with power, even today. Only in puritanical
western society is this sometimes considered excessive or shocking
because the human body is part of nature, and nature is the Christian
enemy (Just in the news New York Mayor Guiliani wants to cancel funding
to the Brooklyn museum because an African-English artist that used
elephant poop in his portrait of the Virgin Mary. This mayor is an
arrogant Catholic that has a blatant disregard for non-western & white
religious practices. He is the same son of a bitch that closed all the
sex shops and outlawed erotic stores.) Western art has sought to take
function out of art and confine visual art only to the image or idea. I
feel that helps to take the power out of art. I do my work primarily in
handmade books because it demands participation from the viewer and
turns the art into contemporary artifact - a hand crafted piece of
tangible reality not an abstract idea or a virtual image.

REVEREND; You are always presenting yourself up as an archetype of
change to society and this creates a lot of fear in people. What does
Coyote fear?

COYOTE; A world police state. A Corporate World Government
accountable to no one. Pre-millennial fascism is at an all time high,
and prisons are profitable. Corporate mergers make me nervous - soon we
will have freedom from choice. There will be “The Bank†, “The
Restaurant†, “The Religion†and “The Truth†. I fear the Corporate
Gestapo rap tap tappin on my chamber door, and arresting me for my art.
Don’t forget that most of the Surrealists fled to America, barely
escaping execution by the Nazis in WWII. Max Ernst’s wife was executed.
Art is still a threat, believe me.
I don’t feel I have any place to run to . I can’t run to Canada
(they’ll send me back), and Europe’s no different. Mexico and South
America are heavily Catholic. There’s no place on earth to escape
America’s wrath . We are trying to control the United Nations and the
world. The rest of the planet hates Americans. We are child killers,
murderers and imperialists. The Hopi prophecy warned about children
killing children. We blame rock musicians for kids killing kids but
kids aren’t dumb, they know what is going on. Do kids see what the
Military Industrial Complex does to people in other countries and
mimic? Or do they ritually turn against a society without rituals? I
refuse to give in and totally submit. Don’t take my guns, I won’t feel
safer. History proves that the State can’t and won’t have absolute
control or at least not for long. But it loves to try.
My worst fear is losing loved ones to the corporate fascist
machine. Christians speak of “Family Values†and presidents speak of
the “New World Order†, both slogans of the Nazis. It’s a beautiful
world we live in but what is a Satanic Apache Priest to do? I think it
is important for artists to remind people that society is a machine
designed to work for us all, not for us all to be slaves to. Joseph
Campbell in the “Power of Myth†said, “The function of the society is
to cultivate the individual. It is not the function of the individual
to support society. Man should not be in the service of society,
society should be in the service of man. When man is in the service of
society, you have a monster state, and that’s what is threatening the
world at this minute.†What I fear most is the Monster State.

REVEREND; Who do you count as an influence in political activism?

COYOTE; The Black panther Party of the 60’s & 70’s and the Political
Activism of the American Indian Movement; considered terrorism by The
F.B.I., but I call it art with purpose. In 1969 A.I.M. took over
Alcatraz island in the San Francisco bay. It was unused Federal land
after the prison closed, and the Right of First Purchase gave Native
Americans the legal right to buy the island. They did and they paid
something like 43 cents a square mile. This is what the Federal
Government wanted to pay to some tribes in the 60’s as compensation for
land stolen years earlier. That was the going rate when the land was
taken. The Federal Government broke it’s own law when they illegally
removed the last occupants, years later. There was much more political
performance activism in the seventies by A.I.M. that will never be
taught to our children in schools but is part of American History
whether we like it or not. Hail Richard Oaks, Clyde and Vernon
Bellecourt, Dennis Banks, Russell Means and John Trudell! I salute you!
It is ironic that the majority of artists of the late Twentieth
Century don’t feel the need to question the Corporate Consumer Culture.
The Corporate Culture is growing more and more fascist and is starting
to take political control. Privatized prisons are being built for
profit, which Angela Davis calls The Prison Industrial Complex . Makes
you think a lot of “successful†artists are just producing propaganda
for the money machine. Where are the questioners? The American
Revolutionaries?

REVEREND; What is your biggest influence on the Native American
community?

COYOTE; I have had an influence in curbing the “Guilt-Speak†of
“Look what the white man did “ to- “Historically Christianity was the
weapon that destroyed indigenous cultures around the world. A major
factor in the extermination of Native Americans and played a big part
in the “American Holocaust.†The rewriters of History never considered
in their wildest dreams that one day the world would speak out against
Christianity for its History of Genocides. Hell even Hitler met with
the Pope in 1938.

REVEREND; And Hitler wrote the U.S. Governments Bureau of Indian
affairs (B.I.A.) to study the reservation system- Basically
Concentration camps.

COYOTE; Yeah, Funk the Pope! And Christianity, his sinking ship of
the new millennium. We will witness the death of Christianity in our
life time. Those same folk that laugh at you and can’t believe you're
a Satanist will laugh loud at those that say they are Christians. The
day their history has been made publicly known.
