On a list, non-Indian-related, there are several people who are enamored
with Mary Summer Rain. I offered a differing viewpoint, and one member
wrote to me to ask more about that viewpoint.
If you have time, could you post your comments about why Mary Summer
Rain is viewed so poorly? I don't want to just give her my opinion only.
Thanks,
LL

Sigh. One's born every minute, but then again...some really work hard at
following and promoting ..all kinds of things. No matter what they're
told as truth.

Good idea, Lisa. Perhaps one of our more talented writers here would like to
undertake it! ;-D
I'm going to piggyback here, Redbear, becuase I deleted LL's post before I
could respond.
I do agree with your comments, as well, but wanted to mention that most of the
stuff she "reveals" in her book are things that are pretty common stereotypical
"knowledge" about NA people, and none of it right, if I remember right.
These writers always start out with the fact that THEY were chosen for this
task for some unknown reason. Or becuase there were no native people UP to the
task! BS pure and simple. It's been years since I read Summer Rain, but I
have to tell you I remember laughing my head off at her idiocy! ;-D

I borrowed the first one from a friend, but we BOTH laughed our heads off. She
had heard about it from another friend of hers and had taken it with her when
we were travelling. By the time we got to Alberta, she was done and gave it to
me to read! Yeah, right! This No Eyes, I think it was, of Lynn Andrews was
supposed to be a Cree, but none of the Cree we encountered had ever heard of
such a person!

Well, I never claimed to have a great memory, particularly as I've gotten
older. At any rate, I remember White Deer asking around about it just as an
insurance policy against making a wrong assumption.

So would I. I don't for a minute believe that any of the three women existed
as portrayed!

I'd heard that! A Navajo guy I know pointed it out some time back. Yep, them
Colville's definitely lived in Hogans and the Navajos lived in teepees!~ ;-D
WELL! She was puzzled as to why we (NDNs!) would feel that way, and
after all, MSR had helped her so much.
Sigh.
So then I mentioned that she was of the same ilk as Lynn Andrews. Chick
didn't know who Lynn Andrews was. I defined her as like MSR "Also
publishes a series of mystick NEW AGE mumbo-jumbo wanna be Indian shaman
books."
I don't think she heard us. On one non-NDN group, people got REALLY
upset with me for telling 'em MSR was a fake. Now her acolytes are
racing to a group for MSR acolytes.
Some days, they just won't hear.
Thanks, for your time, and thoughts..and that info about the boyfriend
co-writer was awesome! :)

I wish I had kept my hands on the magazine that had the interview with
David Carson. I think it was Psychology Today.

I'd love to read that interview. Think I'll look him up on the web.
This newage pretend mystic NDN BS "works" because they tell people what

I have SECRET knowledge, and I can tell you how SPECIAL you are and
share the SECRET knowledge of your evolved connection to the universe
with you..yadda yadda yadda...

That kind are not worth the effort, LL! They will believe to their dying day
what they WANT to believe.
