skinheadz
Some say that Joe Rowan should be listed as a martyr. Some
say not. Some pay him honor. Others do not. At first glance, one
would notice Joe Rowan's heavy, gold-chain necklace, identical
to the kind worn by "rappers." Then, his facial hair and goatee,
indistinguishable from hippies and Beatniks. He called himself
a "Skinhead," however, and appeared at a time, in 1994, when
Skinheads were struggling for their identity, not only in their own
minds, but in the eyes of the public.
Rowan, 22, had latched onto what some might term a "controversial"
or "far-out" wing of those calling themselves Skinheads. Many
asserted that they were not Skinheads, at all, insofar as Skinheads
had sprung up as a backlash against hippies and Beatniks and
aspired to create a world which was just the opposite of the
grunge, "diverse" and debauched society of the Sixties. A cardinal
tenet of Skinheads, however, was the purity of their blood and
Joe's New-Jersey-based band, "Nordic Thunder", promoted
such a theme. All the other band-members were clean-cut and
close-cropped, with no facial hair or necklaces.
Rowan had become a follower of George Burdi, a Bulgarian from
Canada, who founded "Resistance Records" and led the band,
"Rahowa". Burdi was, himself, a follower of the late Ben Klassen, a
Russian immigrant who coined the band's name and tried, unsuccessfully,
to establish an "atheist" church in North Carolina. Burdi's planks,
taken from a book written by Klassen, were comprised of atheism,
violence and a smattering of Satan-worship, mixed in with white-power.
Burdi sported the same goatee as Rowan and depicted long-haired,
grunge-types among his promotional materials.
Burdi touted an anarchistic tone, disdaining the law, police and
authority. Some called it youthful rebellion, while others branded
it as anarchy. Other followers of Burdi included David and Bryan
Freeman of Pennsylvania, who called themselves "Skinheads,"
but who wore the same type of facial hair as Rowan and Burdi.
The Freemans killed their parents for trying to push the Jehovah's
Witnesses brand of "diversity" upon them. Some credited the
influence of Burdi and Rowan as their motivation.
Burdi conducted concerts which were attended by "long-hairs,"
but also by some ordinary Skinheads. One of Burdi's most
vehement themes was opposition to Christianity. Following one
such event in Racine, Wisconsin, Rowan stopped at a convenience
store, was accosted by Negroes and was shot dead by Naseer
Ghani, 19, who objected to Skinheads. Racine County District
Attorney Robert Flancher stated that "we are convinced beyond
a reasonable doubt that Mr. Ghani did the shooting." However,
Ghani's attorney, Mark Richards, insisted that charges be dropped
because the eye-witnesses were all "white supremacists" and,
therefore, "unreliable." Ghani was set free and no one was ever
charged for the murder.
Many memorials were conducted in honor of Rowan, songs
were written, T-shirts distributed and some, even, adopted the
"grunge" appearance in solidarity with the young man who lost
his life, tragically, on his twenty-second birthday. Eventually,
facial hair and necklace-wearing became less popular, even
taboo in many places, and finally virtually disappeared. Some
compared it to a fad which had run its course or a momentary
"coolness" which simply and innocently mimicked the foe.
Chad Huber, for instance, the Skinhead martyr gunned down
by Mexicans in California, had sometimes worn his cap
backwards, even though doing so was a "rapper" and wigger
trademark. Some were understandably critical, but Huber, a
militant anti-immigration activist, remained untarnished.
Would Rowan have changed with the times and gotten rid
of the "rapper" and wigger trappings? Or, would be have
followed Burdi into repudiation and revision? Arne Mathingsdal,
a New Jersey Skinhead and musician, did follow Burdi, after
Burdi repudiated Skinheads. Mathingsdal grew out hippy-type
hair, denounced Skinheads, put on chains and earrings and
became a Zionist. Keith Carney, also of New Jersey, however,
opted to carry on the Rowan grunge-look and agenda, touting
violence, wearing chains, bashing Christianity and getting
busted for law-breaking. But Carney, who stayed with the
white-power theme, has propagandized against clean-cut
Skinheads, who he branded as a "joke" and "losers."
A decade after Rowan's death, it was unclear whether Burdi
had been "put up" by those seeking to smear or mislead
Skinheads, whether he had been "set up" by those seeking to
bring him down or whether he genuinely believed in the cause
he espoused. After being arrested for tax-evasion and jailed
for "hate" and assault, Burdi renounced Skinheads, started a
band composed of Negroes, Jews and homosexuals and moved
in with his East-Indian concubine. Burdi, also, endorsed the
anti-Skinhead campaign of pro-minority activist, Morris Dees.
There seems to be no evidence that Rowan was not sincere.
But his life and times have sparked debate over the role of
Christianity in Skinhead social-activism. According to Nick
Griffin, "Christianity has no bearing on the movement. We
should keep religion out of our movement." But, Pete Barker
has a different view, saying, "Without getting bogged down
in religion, Christianity has been a force within the white
peoples of Europe for many centuries. Christianity can show
us a way, but I'm not suggesting that it is the way for all of our
people. A Skinhead should never say that you can't have
Christianity."
There has, also, been controversy over the instigation of
violence associated with Burdi, Rowan, the Freemans and
others. According to Joe Robbins, "I have been to every
'nationalist' site on the web, only to be repulsed by the
anti-Christian, bombastic and, even, violent attitudes." But
according to Martin Cox, "So you win in court. I don't care
anything about that. You are a fool. Why use a system that
is out to kill you?" So, by honoring Rowan, would undue
pressure be brought to bear against Christianity and toward
lawlessness?
Rowan, unmistakably, was killed "in the line of duty" for his
blood and people. Because of his controversial affiliations and
appearance, he will be given the "honorable mention" which he
unquestionably has earned, but not listed beside the likes of
Daniel Wretstrom or Chad Huber, who were the ultimate Skinheads,
in every way, without deviation. In pausing to remember Rowan,
Skinheads commit themselves to carrying on, stepping higher,
going farther and being victorious. To achieve the purity of their
blood and freedom of their nation, Skinheads vow, also, that neither
the Beatnik nor anarchist lifestyle shall ever intrude upon or mar
their mission.

Joe wore a Thor's Hammer, which identified him as an Odinist. If memory
serves, the chain was silver, not gold. I seriously doubt he was
aspiring to the 'Mr. T look' that you imply with your antiquated view of

century and was called a 'Van Dyck', after Sir Anthony Van Dyck the
Flemish painter of the same name. It's a classical European grooming
style and one that has reemerged throughout the past 400 years at

Rowan, a group of skins and three blacks ( including Ghani ) got into it
at a Starvin' Marvins after a 6 hour Resistance concert at Memorial
Hall. I should know, I dropped 50 bucks on Heinekens that evening and
was shitfaced when I left. Facing the drive back to Milwaukee, I
stopped at Starvin' Marvins for smokes at the same time Joe and his crew
arrived. Inside the store, someone said some impolite things provoking a
confrontation, at which time Ghani and the two others left the store.
Ghani returned, after retrieving a gun from the car and fired into the
group of skins, killing Rowan. Did Joe and his crew initiate the
confrontation? I honestly don't know, but it's not unheard of, since
beer and bravado are a bad combination. ( as bad as mixing Hammers and
blacks ) Nevertheless, that doesn't excuse Ghani's murder of Joe, nor
the absence of justice following his death. At a minimum, a trial was
warranted.

One must really question the rationale of your dislike of
individuality, as is evidenced by your sad attempt to equate a single
style of grooming with the "purity" of "blood and freedom". It's
apparent that Skinheadz has a real hang-up, that I assume, originates
with Dickey Barrett's penchant for the clean cut 'boyish look'. In the
all male world of Skinheadz and given the abundance of homoerotic images
to be found on his website, one can only guess that Mr. Barrett has a
'thing' for young, hairless, shirtless boys. It certainly wouldn't be
the first time that a pederast has used his 'agenda' to attract young men.

What's amusing are Barrett's attempts to enforce conformity of appearance,
and to quash any sign of individuality/self expression from his 'shock
troops'.
What's amazing, is the inability of his recruits to see that

few times we were to connect, he ended up bailing on me. I would have

Grady, take that cock out of your mouth and have a real close look at the
skinheadz website. Some of the pictures are taken straight from gay
websites, some of the cartoons have been stolen from a friend of mine in
Kansas City who is well know for his skinhead artwork. Much of the other
stuff is copyrighted by other people and has been lifted.
There are many on this newsgroup that might sympathize with some/all of your
views but they have the integrity to do their research properly and present

i told them to stuff it. when i called to set up the interveiw they
