Time was when a youth could play on a team, sit in a class and wear
his colors among his own kind. "Team-work" and "team-mates" really
meant a brotherhood of kindred spirits, like minds and common traits.
"Play Ball" meant not only getting in the game, but falling in step
with others headed in the same direction and adding something to the
effort. With all of that gone, youth had, nevertheless, not lost its
instincts to play and win.
The last generation had tried using such terms as "family,"
"conservative" or "tea-partier" as a substitute for what he knew was
the real glue that held the country together and gave him his purpose
in life. "Blood." So, he sought out those, like himself, who said
that "Your Skin is Your Uniform" and, thus, another Skinhead was
born. Being a Skinhead was fun. Showing your pride, slicing through
the guff, standing on your own.
Yet, the Skinhead way-of-life was tough. It meant being on alert,
having to defend yourself at every turn, being a modern-day Minuteman,
of sorts. Still, there were the laughs, when the "big" and "bad"
steered clear of the shiney domes. The cheers, when the flag was
raised by the stoutest limbs. And the pause, when martyrs fell and
honor was paid. "They are so young," would be remonstrated. "But most-
valuable players."
Whatever they lacked in the present, they knew they would forge in the
future. Spotting one another by distinctive dress or characteristic
words did more than form a new team. It renewed the union of one
nation, indivisible. Yet, there was nothing selfish about being a
Skinhead. It was all for others, building that greater team, tighter
bond and common good to fulfill the promise that "he who is greatest
is servant of all."
