SKIN THE SYSTEM

Prior to the boycott of the stacked "Colonel-Reb" "election" at the
University of Mississippi, Ole-Miss "Rebels" had grudging confidence
in the "system." Students had been no strangers to social-protest.
They had turned out in force to oppose integration-by-bayonet, had
gone to jail, for waving the Rebel-flag, and openly defied orders by
Chancellor Dan Jones to halt the chanting of "The South Shall Rise,
Again." But, when the Governor turned his back and officials caved
in, they looked elsewhere.

Students had regarded social-reformers, such as Skinheads, as a bit
off-the-beaten-path or, even, unnecessary, until a Soviet-style
election cut off their rights and struck at their heritage. The Obama
Administration had claimed that it feared the "radicalization" of its
critics, but seemed bent to convince itself that no widespread
uprising would take place. Skinheads had been encouraging "use the
system to change the system," being adept, themselves, in doing so, in
the courts, in the streets and on the stump.

Radicalization, however, was quickly beginning to spread. "Use the
System" yielded to "Skin the System," as appeals to oust sell-out
politicians, petitions to lift oppression and demands for majority-
rule escalated. Skinheads had a reputation for being "rowdy." They
were likely to speak plainly, avoid inhibitions and risk being
"controversial." They, also, had an aura of tough, no-nonsense social-
activism. Most important, they were young and, with the infusion of
student support, had become even younger.

There was nothing "stacked" about Skinheads, except their hustle for
success. Nothing phoney muffled their views of life. Packing for
power, they welcomed solidarity with their newfound compatriots.
"Skin the System" stripped away "polite" "tolerance" of tyranny and
increased strident, albeit lawful, demands to "take back what is
rightfully ours." The development caught many by surprise. Skinheads
had supported the boycott, but not dramatically, until frustration
unleashed a "whole new ballgame."
