I can assure you that the Sumerian and Assyro-Babylonian mythology web pages
are up and running at
http://pubpages.unh.edu/~cbsiren/sumer-faq.html
and /assyrbabyl-faq.html
You'll find more on the afterlife in the Sumer FAQ. You may wish to check
out Kramer's _The_Sumerians_ as well. As for Egypt, I don't remember
what Shawn Knight's Egyptian FAQ says on it, but you can find out a great
deal in E.A.Wallis Budge's _The_Gods_of_the_Egyptians_.

Go find yourself an Egyptian "Book of the Dead". It's like it's title
implies, a book about the soul's journey to the afterlife. You should
be able to find reprints of Budge's _The Book of the Dead_ pretty easily.
You should also know that his translations are now considered less than
correct, but it should be useful none the less. Yeah...."Stargate"
wasn't completely inaccurate...they agreed with the "experts" on Budge.
Hey, but Budge is accessible and easy to find so what do the experts want!
Actually, I have an illustrated Book of the Dead. I believe the color
plates are drawn from the lithographs Budge made from the Papyrus of
Ani. Although it uses Budge for the illustrations, the translations
are more up-to-date. I can get the particulars on the book, if you wish.
