I've been away from the newsgroups for perhaps a year now -- just back a
couple of days. Got to wondering if anybody is using this newsgroup
seriously to discuss mythology any longer. And if not, in what newsgroup
are such discussions occurring.

Yes, it's still used to discuss Mythology ... but not
many messages.

OTOH, alt.mythology is abused by a lot of off-topic
trash ... your best course of action is never reply to
any off-topic messages.

If you find it, please let me know.

soc.history.ancient is what i look at. this group had a debilitating

the current drawback of soc.history.ancient is that it has a lot of
crackpots. that is, you start a discussion with what you think is a
sentient being, but soon realize it's something far different. you have
to weed them out and killfile them.

Do you mean the cowardly, morphing, unprintably stupid, ...
astrology spammer djm? ... Who appears to have no reputation
even on alt.astrology?

I hope the killfile is effective.

But don't post it here or the crazies will follow you to the pristine group.

Mark mentioned alt.history.ancient... It's not as bad as here, but
between Giwer &

stay the same

LIke you Kice, I am just now returning to the newsgroups following an
extended absence.

Is there perhaps an interest out there in setting up a moderated newsgroup
for alt.mythology?

Hi April -- I'd be happy to subscribe to one -- who knows, perhaps the "old
gang" is simply lurking out there, waiting for a mythologically interesting
thread or two (rather than something booted in from another newsgroup) to
which to contribute. I'll keep on lurking here and contributing off and on.

Right now, I'm reading Roberto Calasso's "Literature and the Gods" -- a
fascinating read. Kice

Kice,
How good to see your name. The ng has been pretty much hijacked in your
absence. The old gang is gone, and who can blame them. But I miss them.
I check in once in a while--used to be daily. I would be interested in a
moderated group, never thought I'd say that because I used to like the
student questions. But the current situation is intolerable. Calasso is
certainly an interesting writer.

Hi Kice. I, too, still check in occasionally. Calasso is great, isn't
he? Did you read Ka and the Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony? I was
going to read Literature and the Gods but balked at the $25 price of
the book.

I'd also be interested in a moderated group. I used to read this group
regularly, but now I rarely peek in because I have no interest
whatsoever in astrology.

Let me follow with a me too. Although, for some, no doubt, cosmic
reason, there seems to be a resurgence of mythology posts. It
sort of coincided with Kice's pop in post. Hum?

It's true. It's remarkable. And no shrieking crossposting demons either,
the last few days. Maybe Kice is our attendant spirit. Maybe he can lure
Kim and the Chrises back. It would be nice to have a real group again
that isn't moderated.
