I am seeking documented PhD-level information on the meanings and
associations of the Garuda bird in Mongolian, Tibetan, and possibly
Chinese and other cultures. I also seek information on specific meanings
and usages of the vajra in Shinto and Chinese Buddhism. (I already know
that it's a diamond thunderbolt.)

I took an art history a few years back on Buddhist art. We followed
the art from its origins in India through the Silk Road to China to
Korea to Japan.....and so on. Anyways....although the class was
primarily lecture and slides, we did have two very good texts. One
was:

_The Art and Architecture of the Indian Subcontinent_ by
J.C. Harle, Penguin Books, 1987.

The other was about Buddhist art in Asia. I don't have that one's
title and author with me so email me at gree...@servtech.com if
you want more info on that one.

The Harle book was in Border's last time I looked for it. It has
oodles of b/w pic's and has a 20+ page bibliography - always good
for getting you more sources. I did find Garuda and vajra in the
index, but didn't check it further than that. It's a great book if
you have any interest in Hinduism, Buddhism, and/or India. You
should be able to pick it up for $20 or less.

The other is a very scholarly book about Buddhist art. It doesn't
have as many pictures as the Harle book, but it is on Buddhist art
specifically.
