I picked up this "new" release of Magnification.
Mostly, I'd say this is about the relative fun of having the product in the vinyl format. I don't detect any notable sonic superiority to the DVD-A. But it sounds nice and has a thick gatefold package. The inside is a minimalist background with the lyrics and credits spread across the inside of the gatefold. Nice to sit back and listen in the traditional manner.
The front cover art actually works a little better in this format. It's big enough to better appreciate the image.
The 180g discs are purple instead of black - very cool.
The track order is the same as the original release, but takes up only 3 sides. Side 4 appears to be blank - very unusual.

So that makes who knows how many versions of this record are in the back of a closet(remember the original release had some bonus discs with Gates and CTTE live?). I suppose there are not many more ways to repackage Magnification.

Personally, I would enjoy it if someone could get the master tapes and re-mix it without the orchestra, adding in some piano, Hammond, and a little bit of synth sounds. Maybe a bit more electric guitar. But then it would be a different album.

I've heard a couple of mentions of TALK being a candidate for vinyl release. This I would certainly buy as well.

The following was posted to a.m.y Sept. 26, 2001...

"YES FOWL1:

If you haven't given the MAGNIFICATION compact disc a good listen
since the demise of VINYL, please take the time to do so.

In fact, if you will play them in this manner...

"LP ONE, SIDE ONE"
1. MAGNIFICATION
2. SPIRIT OF SURVIVAL
3. DON'T GO

(pause as if going to the turntable to flip an LP)

"LP ONE, SIDE TWO"
1. GIVE LOVE EACH DAY
2. CAN YOU IMAGINE
3. WE AGREE
4. SOFT AS A DOVE

(longer pause as if changing LP's on the spindle)

"LP TWO, SIDE ONE"
1. DREAMTIME
2. IN THE PRESENCE OF
3. TIME IS TIME

(an even longer pause as you gradually discover:
There's no friggin' "SIDE TWO" on "LP TWO"!)

... you will find the ebb and flow and VINYL majesty of this release
practically leaping at you.

Someone posted here in another thread that the new CD is the first time
YES has been truly main sequence in over 25 years. This cannot be true,
simply for this reason: YES is made for VINYL, the original intended
format of all their main sequence material. And MAGNIFICATION -- which
truly should have been released on VINYL -- i.e., a one and one-half LP
set -- could only then have been one of this band's greatest artistic
achievements ever -- and perhaps their finest moment -- on VINYL.

I work in the VINYL recording industry and am often hired as a "GHOST
NEEDLER" -- that means I spend many, many hours painstakingly breaking
down other writers' CD work into approximate 20 minute chunks in an
effort to bring their underlying VINYL-based themes into focus and
heighten the dramatic intensity (i.e., ebb and flow) of the overall
piece.

Please try spinning these tracks in my recommended manner and GET UP,
GET DOWN -- as in those virtual trips to the turntable to change the
VINYL! Enjoy.

YES FOWL1
(The VINYL word -- on everything, YES?)"
