comes out tomorrow, and one of the topics Web surfers are discussing
is if the famed director was inspired by Yes and Asia cover artist
Roger Dean. Various sites have posted Dean’s artwork, which is
strikingly similar to landscapes and creatures from “Pandora,” the
fictional land where Avatar takes place. No word yet from Cameron if
he got ideas from Dean, but search the Internet for comparisons and
you can see the parallels yourself.

I saw the movie this weekend and thought the same thing. I turned to
my wife and whispered to her, "This place looks like a Yes album
cover." She agreed. Whether Cameron was influenced by Dean or not, the
designs were visually stunning IMO.

Earlier this afternoon I walked out from seeing Avatar a second time;
the first time interrupted by my 17 year-old son who kept elbowing me
in the ribs every time there was an "ooh" or an "ahh." Time to pay
attention... lol! I definitely agree about the Dean comments; a little
more technical data around floating mountains and tribes flying about
them from A. A. Attanasio's "In Other Worlds" part of the Radix
tetraology. There are many more parallels with the book but leaving
the theater I was whisting the opening theme to "The Revealing Science
of God" and the guitar work prior to the "What Happened To This Song."
um, er, song. Really seemed to fit, all things considered.

surprise me to find out that the lead on art direction studied Roger's
work at great length since the creatures resemblance is far too great
along with the floating islands and color schemes. It also wouldn't
surprise me to find out that the script or story brief for Floating
Islands had passed by the desks of Hollywood execs who do not object
to blatant thievery (refer to the movie ELF, originally written by
Gunnar Madsen - children's music composer and oft times member of The
Bobs). I did not look through the credits of Avatar to see if Roger
Dean was mentioned, but if he was involved I would believe there would
have been some kind of buzz on the issue.
