Les Cruches 1965 > 1970

Les Cruches (pronounced something like leh-krish - rhymes with
liquorice) came from Tilburg Holland. Their name apparently a slang,
came from the name of the fashionable wearers of a particular hair
style which in turn was named after the region in Holland in which it
was popular / came from - Kruikensijkers. The lineup was Frans Biezen
a.k.a. Frankie/Franky Duzzle (V) (?presumably replaced by) * Jo(h)n
Anderson, Evert Verkuik (G) replaced by * Martin van Esch (G) * Johan
van der Ven (K, V), Piet Van Acker (B) replaced by Sjef van Wereld
replaced by * Will Coolen (B), Ton Berkel (D) replaced by Ad Linkels
replaced by * Joske van der Dries (D)

* indicates was most likely in the band w/Jo(h)n Anderson - this
would, in my best estimation of events (considering the split up of
The Gentle Party, making the Hans Christian singles, and then Jo(h)n
going to Holland to join them), appears to have been around February
1968. It is unknown if Jo(h)n Anderson replaced Biezen/Duzzle or maybe
sang as a second/backing vocalist and played Sax as he did in The
Warriors and The Gentle Party.

Or more specifically

1965: Franz Biezen (V) (aka. Solo artist named Frankie Duzzle), Evert
Verkuik (LG), Johan Bertens (perc.), Piet van Acker (B), Ton van
Berkel (D), Johan van der Ven (K, V)

1967: Franz Biezen / Franky Duzzle (V), Evert Verkuik (LG), Johan
Bertens (D), Sjef van Wereld (B), Ad Linkels (D), Johan van der Ven
(K, V)

1968: Franz Biezen / Franky Duzzle (V), Johan van der Ven (K, V),
Martin van Esch (G), Will Coolen (B), Joske van der Dries (D)

As a CBS recording band they recorded a number of records as follows:

LES CRUCHES SINGLES
I'm Gonna Be A Father % Walking And Strolling CBS 2276 (NL) 1966
Keep Off % I Try To Find CBS 2425 (NL) 1966
It's Always Me % Nose For Trouble CBS 2560 (NL) 1967
Will You Always Love Me % Mum And Dad CBS 2766 (NL) 1967
Whisky Bar % Good Times Gonna Roll Again CBS 3073 (NL) 1967
Lulu % Do You See The People Delta 1292 (NL) 1968

LES CRUCHES ALBUM
LES CRUCHES 'LIVE': side 1: Good Times Gonna Roll Again ; I See The
Rain ; The Day I Met Marie ; Whiskey Bar ; Everybody Knows ; Our Day
Will Come % side 2: Baby Now That I've Found You ; My Little Chickadee
; Annabella ; Nose For Trouble ; It's Too Late ; The House That Jack
Built. Cover photograph - Cees De Jong. Cover Design - Harry Van Zijl.
CBS S 52499 (NL) 1968

Complete with wah-wah guitar, a very show-band approach and absolutely
no mention of who played the sax or horns on the album. Don't know why
but second song reminds me of Koobas and Tintern Abbey's "Vacuum
Cleaner" for some reason. On "Everybody knows" I can hear what the
Warriors would have sounded like doing this one. "Whiskey Bar" is
Brecht/Weill's "Alabama Song" as recorded by the Doors.

The cover photo was of the band standing amongst trees, the shot taken
peering through the bushes with the band in full psychedelic dress and
a bright orange psychedelic logo. Think along the lines of the inside
of Yes' first album (British version), like a couple of Syn shots I've
seen - very 1960s fashion.

I hope this helps in some way,
Cheers,
Clifford

Les Cruches means stone bottles, jars in French and that name came from the
bottles the workers and their family filled with urine at home in the
morning before going to work. The urine was used in the textileworks to
bleach and full the wool. So people from Tilburg are called "kruikenzeikers"
(pissers in jars) that is a nickname with a totally normal explanation as
described above and no term of abuse as many people think.
After making the records mentioned by Clifford Henny Vrienten joined Les
Cruches, the leader of Doemaar, a band that was extremely popular in the
Netherlands with beatlemania proportions topping the charts regularly. They
made reggaemusic in Dutch language.
About les Cruches very little can be found on the internet and Jon Anderson
doesn't remember the details either. He asked a fan after the symphonic
concert in Antwerp, the day after recording the Amsterdam DVD, where he came
from and when he said Limburg ( a province in Belgium) Jon said: "I've
played in a Limburg band once" probably messing up the names Tilburg and
Limburg.
Other members of Les Cruches who became more known are:
John van der Ven who produces records of Andre Hazes, a popular singer of
dutch songs nationally famous and
Ad Linkels (died 4-24-2002), later known for his antropology research of
polinesian music.

If someone knows more about Les Cruches and especially the time Jon Anderson
was a member please send your info.

Great stuff, thank you very much for the clarification of the source
of the name Les Cruches and additional information. It is very much
appreciated.

Now, is it possible for one to shape their hair like one of those
bottles ? ;-)

As always, my very humble apologies for any inaccuracies.

Cheers,
Clifford

Whew! When I saw the header, I thought Jon had had another holiday mishap.
