This Wednesday, May 16, 9--11 p.m., at Folk Night at The Ship
Pub in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the headliners are local Ukrainian
folk rock band The Kubasonics. There is also an open mic set between
the two headline sets and open mic performers get a free beer.
Cover is only $5 and there are three door prizes.
Also the kitchen is open until 8 p.m.

Here is the band description from the Facebook event page, which is
https://www.facebook.com/events/125613361634863/

"The Kubasonics are arguably Newfoundland's finest Ukrainian band. Winners of
3 MusicNL Awards (Group of the Year, Folk/Roots Artist of the Year, The
Overcast Fan’s Choice Entertainer of the Year), their trademark sound
combines top-flight musicianship spiced with quirky humour, a dizzying array
of exotic traditional instruments, and an eclectic high-energy stage show.
They have appeared in 9 of Canada's provinces and territories, performed in
Trinidad and toured Eastern Europe.

Their most recent recording “Kubfunland” draws on a wealth of Ukrainian
traditional material ranging from centuries old chants, ritual dance
melodies, songs of love and troubled relationships, toe-tapping party music,
and even a set of Newfoundland dance tunes. “Kubfunland” was shortlisted
for the 2017 Borealis Music Award.

The Kubasonics have had their music included on a number of compilations and
the group has been featured on national Radio and TV broadcasts, and even on
Hockey Night in Canada."

Actually it goes to 11:30 p.m. if there is a full open mic set, but
in recent months that hasn’t been the case.
