It turns out "Son" was originally done by a band called Michaelangelo
c. 1971. I can't tell you any more than that, since online info on
Michaelangelo is hard to come by (they have no entry in the All Music
Guide, for example). All I know is the track comes from the album ONE
VOICE MANY (Columbia C30686). You can see a photo here:

The location of the group is unknown, though there are hints they were
also from
the NY area. This album is nice psych pop with harpsichord and female
vocals.

"One Voice Many" 1971 (Columbia c-30686) [wlp also exists]
Great folk-rock album, led by "Angel," who plays the
autoharp like one. Several instrumentals are given meat by some very
hot guitar playing, and for once the male vocals are actually as
appealing as (or more than) the female vocals. "Son," which
integrates drug abuse, Vietnam, parents who don't understand their
kids, and that same old three-chord structure you've heard a zillion
times, is transcendent. Some mellower folky songs are very lovely.
Overall, one of the very best major label folk-rock albums. A real
sleeper. [AM]

Can anybody tell me anything about this band or this specific song?
Such as where they were from, members, start and breakup dates.....
You can hear the original Michaelangelo version in real audio here
(starts around 32:45):

FWIW, Golden Smog has a new album -- their third in 14 years -- coming
out in the summer:

Here's the little bit that Acid, Fuzz & Flowers has on Michaelangelo:
Personnel:
ANGEL autoharp, vcls A
STEVE BOHN gtr, vcls A
ROBERT GORMAN bs, vcls A
MICHAEL JOHN HACKETT drms A
ALBUM:
1(A) ONE VOICE MANY (Columbia C 30686) 1971
45s:
1 300 Watt Music Box/Half A Tap (Columbia 4-45328) 1971
2 West/It's Crying Outside (Columbia 4-45459) 1971
Delicate and melodic baroque soft-rock with a mellow hippie aura. Vocally
not unlike the softer moments of the Peanut Butter Conspiracy or Comfortable
Chair. Where they came from is unknown, though some of the credits hint at
it being recorded in New York City. To be taken in the drawing-room with
perfumed tea.
"300 Watt Music Box" must've gotten some radio play, as I heard it on
Joe Dononvon's oldies show out of Louisville in the mid 90s.

Anybody remember the "One Voice Many" LP on Columbia by the group
Michaelangelo? It came out in '71, and the group's leader, Angel, was
featured
on the electric autoharp. Guess which instrument was mixed out of
phase?
One of the tracks from that LP, "Son (We've Kept The Room Just The Way
You Left
It)" gained a fair amount of FM play. But on our AM carrier current
campus
station, it was only about "half" there.
Columbia managed to do a mono, in-phase mix for promo copies of the
"It's
Crying Outside" / "West" single, while the stock copies were released
in
stereo. Another single, the instrumental "300 Watt Music Box," was
sent
to
radio in stereo.

Rachel Elkind-Tourre, who was my producer for a dozen years, also
worked with a few other artists during the time we had a studio up in
her former Upper West-side brownstone....
Rachel was easy to work with, musically astute while supportive, and it
was interesting to watch her work with someone else. During the same
time, she produced several other projects, including an easy listening
album (on the charts for months) by a talented group of young musicians
called (as was the album): "Michaelangelo." It was a satisfying
experience, one which at times called on me to help out with some
musical bits, an odd overdub or two. Their biggest hit was the
infectious: "300-Watt Music Box." For some years we stayed in touch
with their lead songwriter, auto-harpist Angel Petersen, and multi
talented guitarist, Steve Bone. Eventually they moved away and we lost
touch.
