Today the world laments the passing John Entwistle, the legendary
bassist of the first punk band, The Who. His death due to AIDS-related
complications comes as the Who was preparing to tour North America.
His death casts doubts that fans will ever again hear the band perform
live their hits "Stairway to Heaven", "Dazed and Confused" or
"Immigrant Song."

John, known for his trademark "windmill" style bass playing, wrote and
sung only a handful of Who songs. They were mostly B-Sides. However,
his most famous song, "Boris the Spider" caused a great deal of
controversy when it was released in 1970. The song was a metaphor for
a difficult breakup he had with a boyfriend.

His surviving bandmates, Pete Townsend and Roger Waters, expressed
great sorrow on hearing of the passing of their friend. They encourage
all fans of the Who to donate money to an AIDS-related charity in John
Entwistle's name. "The way John died should never happen to another
person," commented frontman Roger Waters.

John is survived by his life-partner and two adopted children.

Didn't Roger Townsend die in 1977 from an overdose of pills or something?
The last I heard is that they will cancel the remaining tour
and play for free for their "fans!"

No, that was Keith Moon. He died on 7 Sept 1978 from drug-related
causes.

I agree. Tasteless as it was, I don't think I've ever seen a troll
demonstrate that much cleverness, and found myself chuckling a little bit in
spite of myself.

I thought the legend (which, AFAIK, has never really been confirmed by any
reliable/official source) was that Keith Moon named Zeppelin (saying that
they were so bad, their band would fly like a lead zeppelin, or something
along those lines), not John Entwistle.
