I took the tube back out of town,
back to the rolling hills.
I felt a little like a dying clown,
with a street car rin-tin-tin <-----That one's just a guess!
I staggered back and I hiccuped,
and looked back on my busy day.
Eleven hours in the tin pan,
God there's got to be another way

[Chorus]

I know there's a place you walk,
where love falls from the trees.
My heart is like a broken cup,
I ought to be down on my knees.
I spit out like a sewere hose,
and still receive your kiss.
How can I measure up to anyone now
after such a love as this.

[Chorus]

I'm guessing at a couple of spots there. I'm sure that
those spots will be corrected in the near future. Whoever does
so, I've got a question - what are the lyrics to the lost
verse on the re-mastered disc.

The closest I can come is:

yadda yadda yadda
jumpin' with my lead guitar
I must have looked like a wreck son,
'cause I ended up a superstar
One night I was in the boardroom
yadda yadda yadda
You can learn from my mistake
yadda yadda yadda.

Thanks

I think the actual lyric here is "back to the rolling pin".

Steve,
I think the "rolling pin" refers to Pete's wife, who's gonna give him a
bash on the head 'cause she didn't know where he was last night.
Incidentally, "Tin Pan" is right. It refers to the music publishing
district of a city (especially New York, but in this case London). The
story is that Pete had just spent several hours settling copyright
claims with the Who's old managers and went away with a huge check which
he promptly tore up in a fit of middle-aged "washed-up rock star" angst.
(Thus the lost verse of "Who Are You" which I think refers to a
"boardroom" at one point). Still don't know what the Rin-Tin-Tin line
means, though.

Who Are You (Pete Townshend)
Š 1977 Towser Tunes Ltd.

Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?

I woke up in a Soho doorway
A policeman knew my name
He said "You can go sleep at home tonight
If you can get up and walk away"

I staggered back to the underground
And the breeze blew back my hair
I remember throwin' punches around
And preachin' from my chair

chorus:
Well, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
Tell me, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
'Cause I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)

I took the tube back out of town

Back to the Rollin' Pin

I felt a little like a dying clown

With a streak of Rin Tin Tin

I stretched back and I hiccupped
And looked back on my busy day
Eleven hours in the Tin Pan
God, there's got to be another way

Who are you?
Ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa ...

Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?

(chorus)

I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees

My heart is like a broken cup

I only feel right on my knees

I spit out like a sewer hole
You still recieve your kiss

How can I measure up to anyone now

After such a love as this?

(chorus)

Sounds more like "back to the rolling pin", but that doesn't make much
sense. Could be some bit of London slang.

I've always seen Rolling Pin capitalized, so I assume its the name of
a pub or bar.

i always heard rolling pin and conjured in my mind a picture of pete
sheepishly returning to his wife who has been waiting up by the door
with a rolling pin in her hand waiting to bop her wayward hubby in the
noggin. call me crazy, that's my take,

I'm familiar with that story. To add to his 'washed-up rock star'
angst,
Pete apparently ran into Steve Cook and one of the other Sex Pistols
that
night, and mistook them for Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious. When he
found
out his mistake he was mortified, which only worsened his condition.

The Rin-Tin-Tin line probably referes to the trained German Shepard. He
was a big movie dog star before lassie. Pete probably thought of
himself
as little more than a trained animal at the time. At least that's my
guess.

Karen Townshend waiting by the door with a rolling pin? If you believe
the stories (and song lyrics), that sounds more like something Allison
Entwistle would've done!!! :)
