Just got MBB&B and Who's Next from hmv.com

alt.music.who, particularly Luke and Jason, for the suggestion of
buying the Canadian CDs of MBB&B and Who's Next from hmv.com. They
were an incredible bargain and they sound great.
I was never comfortable with the idea of bonus tracks on Who's Next so
to have such a great sounding CD in its original configuration is
fantastic.
I still prefer "I Can't Explain" and "Substitute" on MG-TVBOTW, but
the rest of MBB&B has better and/or different versions than my other
CDs. After hearing The Ultimate Collection, I'm glad I didn't buy it.
(As an aside, I also picked up Roger Waters' The Pros And Cons Of
Hitchhiking, as well. It was the same price as Who's Next and
includes the uncensored cover.)
All this for such a low price. I am floored.

While I'd agree that Substitute sounds better on MG-... (despite the
noise reduction), I'd give MBBB the edge for ICE. MBBB has the song in
clean mono, while MG has it with a lot of fake stereo processing.

I know this subject has been discussed ad nauseum, but I will add my
own two cents.
MBB&B definitely has better sounding versions of "I Can See For Miles"
and "My Generation", as well as, slightly better sounding "Pictures Of
Lily" and "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere".
MG-TVBOTW definitely has a better sounding "Substitute".
"I Can't Explain" and "Happy Jack" are subjective. I like ICE on
MG-TVBOTW, but I can see how someone can prefer the MBB&B version.
For me, "Happy Jack" sounds better on MBB&B when listening with
headphones, but when using speakers, MG-TVBOTW sounds better. I don't
know why that is, but it is.
"Boris The Spider" and "Magic Bus" are in stereo on MBB&B, so I prefer
those, even though "Boris" has a bit more tape hiss than I would like.
Both CDs have shitty versions of "Pinball Wizard". I go to my Tommy
CD (MCA, pre-remix) for that one.
"The Seeker" and "I'm A Boy" are different versions entirely. Both
versions of each have their strong points although the MBB&B version
of "The Seeker" has a more dynamic mix.
I can take or leave "A Legal Matter", but it's nice to finally have a
good version of "The Kids Are Alright".

halfway through. Anybody else have this on theirs?

Actually, if I remember correctly, the volume gets *louder* about
halfway through. I wonder if the song was just mixed that way, and other
versions have it "evened out"...

I've noticed the opposite. It gets louder as the song progresses. It starts off
quiet and by the end, it's very loud.
I like the version of Substitute on Who's Better Who's Best. The one on
MGTVBOTW might sound "cleaner" but the one on WBWB sounds like "The Who".
There's a certain sound that The Who had that remixing and "cleaning up" kills.
If you've never heard the original Who albums you're missing a lot.

I have owned vinyl copies of MBB&B, Tommy, and Quadrophenia. I
currently own copies of Who's Next, It's Hard, and the "Squeeze
Box/Success Story" single. Not to mention the fact that I remember
when radio stations played records. I know what the original Who
records sound like.
Cleaner isn't the point. The lower ranges sound very good on the
MG-TVBOTW "Substitute". On MBB&B, it sounds like cassette recording
of an AM radio. The booming bass is what makes "Substitute".
I don't think ALL of the songs are ruined by cleaning up. "My
Generation", "I Can See For Miles", and "Pinball Wizard" sound
"neutered" on MG-TVBOTW, but I don't find any other song on this CD
unacceptable.
Since I'm more than happy with "Substitute", "Join Together", and "Who
Are You" (I don't need the 3rd verse) on MG-TVBOTW, I have no use for
WBWB.
But, hey, that's just me. I'm not going to force you to listen to my
CDs.

Substitute sounds like shit on MBBB. It sounds a lot better on WBWB. It's all a

Don't get me wrong, Jason. If I had it to do over again, I would buy
WBWB instead of MG-TVBOTW, but I don't find the latter so unacceptable
as to warrant buying a new CD with the same material. I'm not totally
averse to noise reduction. I listened to cassettes with it for years
before I realized how much better LPs and CDs sounded without it.
(I've since sworn off of cassettes, using Minidiscs for home
recording.)
While I may think that you are more sensitive than most when it comes
to audio quality, you direct people to the best available Who
recordings and for that you should be commended. Thanks to you (and
Luke), I have more good sounding Who CDs than bad ones. I am grateful
for that.

I just checked my copy. The volume goes up about 1:36 min's into the song.
