IT'S NOT EVERYONE'S DREAM FURNITURE . . .
10:30 - 20 June 2006
This furniture graced the home of legendary rock guitarist John Entwistle
for 30 years. If it could speak, the furniture would tell 1,000 tales - and
it could all be yours.
The new owners of Quarwood, the Cotswold mansion which was the star's home
for 27 years, have decided they don't much like his taste.
They want to return the 50-bedroom Victorian manor to a 1930s style.
So they're ripping out what's left of the guitarist's personalised decor and
selling it off.
Enwistle commissioned, designed and ordered panelling for his master
bedroom, which included a padded headboard, as well as a range of furniture.
It will all go under the hammer at the Frogmill Hotel in Andoversford on
June 28.
It's the third auction to feature the legendary bassists possessions. He
died in June 2002.
His mother Queenie and son Chris auctioned 700 lots last April, raising
£123,000 and a previous auction raised £1 million.
Many of them were bought by Yvia ten Bos, the new owner of Quarwood.
But she and husband Piet Pulford have drawn the line at keeping Entwistle's
furniture.
Martin Lambert, fine art auctioneer and valuer at Humberts Fine Art, said:
"The new owners are renovating the house in a 1930s style and have decided
to sell the furniture designed by John Entwistle. The most exciting has to
be a panelled room.
"Mr Entwistle designed and ordered it with a huge panelled headboard.
"It's truly a one-off and features his own family crest and his name
engraved on it.
"There is a whole range of other memorabilia including 14 Gothic chairs and
a certificate from the Hard Rock Cafe in London signed by Mr Entwistle.
"He had these items in his house for many years and they are part of rock
history.
"When we sold previous lots, many went to America, as The Who were huge over
there and we're expecting a lot of interest.
"The catalogue for this sale has just come out and we've already had
enquiries.
"Some really nice things are being sold and they are only coming out as the
house is being renovated.
"These items come up very rarely and we feel lucky to have them as John
Entwistle was one of the best bass players in the world.
"The original sale of items from the house raised in excess of six figures
last year and it is hard to say what the figure will be later this month.
It's a part of a larger antique and fine art sale."
The memorabilia can be viewed on at the Frogmill Hotel on June 27 from 8am
to 7pm. Sale day starts at 10am.
