Was Jack Nicholson really singing in the Tommy movie, or was it overdub?
I'm just asking because the voice coming out of Nicholson's mouth sounds
nothing like him.

Pete says it was Nicholson and it took a long time to get a usable vocal out
of him.

If you want to call what they used 'useable'!

Sounded like Nicholson to me - but then, some people just can't sing!

Well, I wouldn't really call it "singing", as such, but I would suspect that's
really him doing it. I can't imagine them saying "Well, his voice isn't really
what we want for the role" and then replacing it with what we hear in the film.

Mind you, at least you only have to listen to Jack for one song. Oliver Reed
keeps coming back to wreck every song Ken Russell hands him in the film. Mind
you, I suppose given the role that Reed is supposed to be playing, I suppose
his vocal delivery is spot on, BUT that doesn't make it any easier to listen
to.

Why couldn't they have just stuck to having rock musicians do all the roles in
the movie? Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, and Arthur Brown are all great. I suppose
Elton John is good, too, if you like that sort of thing (I don't). The only
non-rock vocalist type who sings in the Tommy movie who doesn't sound terrible
is Ann Margaret. A bit over the top at times, but then that's more or less what
the role called for.

I just have one question: did wassisname who plays Cousin Kevin (Paul
Nicholas?) ever doing anything that wasn't connected with a movie based on a
classic rock album? I know he was in the horrific Sgt Pepper's movie, but did
he ever make like a regular album or anything?

Every once in awhile, in my dreams, I see Frampton and The Bee Gees in those
matching outfits from that movie. And then I wake up screaming.

Rock stars are what Pete wanted but he was overruled by Columbia Pictures
that insisted on some non-rock "names" in the cast. Up to that time no
rock-oriented movie had appealed to anyone but rock fans (Woodstock the
possible exception). Tommy The Movie went on to be one of the biggest movie
hits of 1975 and it might not have if non-rock oriented audiences had seen
only rock stars on the marquee.

As Oscar, he had the privilege of having Pete's song "Join My Gang" all to
himself. After that he starred in the London production of "Hair" before
appearing in Tommy and Lisztomania (as Richard Wagner). He then started a
solo recording career. His biggest U.K. hit was "Dancing With The Captain"
(1976) while in the U.S. it was "Heaven On The 7th Floor" (1977). From there
he went back on stage, playing Rum Tum Tugger in the original London
production of Cats. He was last seen in the second series of the British TV
show Sunburn (2000).

So, apparently, Paul Nicholas was the only one, outside of Aerosmith, who
didn't have his career wrecked by being involved in the Sgt Pepper's fiasco,
huh?
