"now i'm freaking out" and "so long jerry" are two especially nice
sounding ones.
so i was wondering...in "so long jerry"--it sounds like ol gener's about
to cry about the day jerry garcia died. i mean...it was a bad day. but
i was wondering if dean and gene used to go to dead shows and if they
were fans of the Dead--or if they were just ripping on that segment of
society that eats veggie burritos for breakfast and is still searching
and touring the world for the new garcia messiah? cause you
know...that's more plausible.
also...anyone who has any good MP3's of ween or can steer to me to some
good places to find some more would be really grand. i've got some
posted on my site that i can trade.
so long jerry, so long-

Plausible? Mang, have you really listened to the tune, or are you just
saying that?
Listen to his voice... I guess if anyone would be able to sing with
that much feeling while laughing inside, it would be Gener, but I
don't buy it.
This is one half of the the reason I love the Bros so much: From one
track to the next, they can go off on completely different
wavelengths. Look at something like It's Gonna Be Alright, or What
Deaner Was Talking About, or Birthday Boy, or even Baby Bitch: So much
emotion, he's made me cry on occasion. But then they go and hit us
with Molly or The Stallion Pt. 3 or Squelch The Weasel or Dancing In
The Show Tonight, which are all pure comedy of the finest quality. And
then there's You Fucked Up, and Mushroom Festival In Hell, And Dr.
Rock, and Captain Fantasy: Rock 'n Roll Anthems that give the classics
(Rock 'n Roll, Born To Be Wild, Looks That Kill) a run for their
money... You know what I would do, given the chance to hang out with
the Bros at home? Make a beeline for their record collections. I would
love to see what made each of them tick in their youths, and who
brought what influences (not to mention the mind-altering chemicals)
to the table the first time they turned on a 4 track.
By the way, any theories on which tracks they recorded the vocals at a
slower speed, and which were actually helium-induced?
But we were talking about So Long Jerry... My vote goes for dead
seriousness in that track. Say what you will about hippies and
deadheads, Garcia could certainly make a musical point on his good
days, particularly a lot of his 70's output. There was some terrible
stuff towards the end, but that takes nothing away from what came
before, same as the embarrasment that the Stones have become takes
nothing away from Gimme Shelter :->
Blah blah blah blah blah...
Oh yeah...
Some little junkie bastard broke into my house and took 300 CDs,
including Z-Rock Hawaii. Apparently none of my local merchants, as
well as CDnow, are able to even locate it in their catalogues. If
anyone out there who has it is willing to make me either MP3s or a CDR
copy of that album, they would have my everlasting gratitude, as well
as a few copies of anything from my boot list, which is available on
request. If you can help me, toad at escape dot ca (converted to
proper format) is my email...
toad at escape dot ca
Currently in heavy rotation:
Nothing, thanks to little junkie motherfuckers.
also, during that same show, they dedicate LMLYP to Jerry saying "he'd be
into this."
I'd say they were probably genuinely into the Dead, and the party that
went along with it.

Geez, I am sorry but I totally disagree. I think Jerry never made a
point musically, just noodled along. I'm an old mofo and saw the Dead
open for Janis Joplin at the Fillmore East back in the day and the
Dead sucked then, they sucked in the 70s and will always suck. But hey
that's just my opinion. I just hated Jerry's meandering solos. Going
nowhere very fast!

Solos? Bah. I'm talking about the singing, man, the singing :->
Give a good hard listen to something like Sugaree (the version from
his first (I think) solo album), or a live ver of Morning Dew, or I
Know You Rider or Crazy Fingers off One From The Vault... Hell, even
the cover he did of Waiting For a Miracle off that early 90's double
live album was decent. Not to mention Friend of the Devil & Brokedown
Palace off American Beauty. Any one of these could be used as an
example of how to sing with feeling.
You know what really sucked though? The guitar/mandolin album he did
with Dave Grisman, around 91-92 or something. The whole thing was a
cynical grab at the sheeplike deadhead cashola... sounded like they
just walked in, no rehearsal, recorded the whole thing in one take and
sat back to collect the cash which they knew would come. Yes, Garcia
did suck, for the most part, but not when he actually tried.
Oh, man... I think that first record they did together
("Garcia/Grisman") is just fucking lovely! They'd recorded together
years earlier (Grisman is on American Beauty) and traveled the country
in their early 20s, taping (yes, Jerry was a taper!) bluegrass legends
Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, etc, at summer bluegrass festivals. So,
it made sense for them to reconvene years later & put out some of that
old time music. His playing on that is some of the clearest, sweetest
stuff he did in his last years. (and even I, a huge fan, will admit
there wasn't much good stuff toward the end)
Also, "cashola"? I don't think that disc, released on Grisman's small
label, sold tens of millions, exactly...
Now, where can I find this "So Long Jerry"? I've searched high & low
but can't find the Piss Up A Rope single. Any pointers?

Well, Daniel Erat had an mp3 on his page, back when he had mp3s...
apparently all the stuff he had up has been switched over to
Realaudio, so you can probably still hear a much-shittier sounding
version there... otherwise, I may be able to dig up the mp3 meself and
post it here, as soon as I'm finished unpacking (everything is still
in boxes, and it would be buried on a cdr somewhere...)
I think you'll dig it, especially if you're a fan of both the dead and
Ween :->
By the way, I wasn't really pissing on Grisman at all. I'm sure that,
like Garcia, he's done some excellent stuff (although on the "Anthem
to Beauty" tv special he openly admitted that his playing on Ripple
was rather weak, due to the fact that they gave him all of 5 minutes
to come up with something :-)
I was just bored to sleep when I heard that album they did. Jerry
sounded bored the whole way through, and let's face it, while both the
guitar and the mandolin are beautiful instruments, just the two of
them together aren't nearly enough for proper bluegrass. Maybe if
they'd brought a banjo player, it might have given the album a
sorely-needed energy boost. Maybe Jerry shoulda switched to methadone
for a couple weeks too. :->
This is exactly what I was going to ask. Is there a new album out or
something?

Q: How many Vorlons does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: Good.
Erat has (had?) ..Jerry and ..Freaking Out.
Yes unfortunealtely some of the more rare recordings are on RA. As for Dan
Erat's MP3 to RA (mentioned in the thread below), the MP3's were sampled at
such a low rate that there's little difference in quality between his RA's
and MP3s.
Koller's Ween Wide Web is clearly has the best quality recordings but he's
getting lazy. The April 15 show hasn't been posted and it's May 15.

Last night in Denver they did, "Stella Blue". It was smomkin.
