Just thought I'd mention that after owning this stoopit keyboard for
about 6 months, I've finally found the friggin' drum sounds. This
thing is too complex for me, I shoulda got a Casiotone.

What kind of keyboard is it?

Yamaha S-80. It's pretty sweet, but it'll be 10 years before I
understand, let alone make use of, all the features.

Like right now, now that I've found the drum sounds, I'm trying to
figure out how to sequence the bloody things.

Like, can I send them out to Cakewalk or some shit, and then have it
play the whole thing back or something? Damn. I get the feeling this
thing can be completely emancipating if I ever figure it out.

yeah, and it gets better from there! you can quantize the drums if
they're not on beat enough for you, throw in fills, repair mistakes.
you oughta talk to Slasher or Mingo about your setup, they really have
the MIDI stuff down.

I wish one a youze fuckers lived near me. Is there a be-all end-all
type midi reference book? I'm not opposed to blowing some cash if it's
well-spent.

Who needs a book? (Other than the manual for your keyboard and the manual
for Cakewalk).

I hook up the keyboard and the computer (remember in<->out), play
something I like on the keys, then record it onto a track in Cakewalk (by
playing it again). There's some bookkeeping involved to set the temp and
all of the track parameters correctly in Cakewalk to match your
performance (mainly what instrument was used, what the channel number is
supposed to be, any FX on the track, etc), and you'll usually want to
quantize the performance.

Do a bunch of tracks like that, set the "volume" on the tracks the way you
want, and you're done!

Unless of course you want to copy/paste stuff from track to track (or
maybe to repeat a motif or rhythm) or make other changes.

Them's the basics. Anything else you can pick up as you go along!

The toughest part may be mapping the instruments and FX on your keyboard
with the MIDI stuff you record in the Cakewalk file. Some of those
parameters may only be available as SYSX data (my keyboard does this) and
you'll definitely need your keyboard manual to figure that out.

SP: MY MENT TO SAY "MY" INSTED OF "IM" BELOW SO YOU NO AT.
