The master tapes of these albums are all more than 30 years old. I
wonder just how much "cleaning up" can be done with such old tape, and
still sound like they were meant to sound. Presumably they'll simply
make everything LOUDER so that it "sounds" better, but really isn't.
Those mint-condition first-press vinyl LP's are going to be hard to
beat sound-wise.
Vangelis supervised the remastering of these disks himself, and so far, his remasters have shown that he makes no (or almost no) compromises to join the loudness war. It's actually the most important difference between Esoteric's initial Aphrodite's Child remasters, and the revised remasters released in collaboration with Vangelis a few months later.
Thing is, with the Rossif albums you're discussing the initial CD releases were simply rather poorly mastered for CD, and the tapes were already old by that time. It makes a lot of sense that the CD masters can be improved a lot by going back to the original tapes, and doing a proper transfer.
As for the vynils, don't forget that they were never the way they were supposed to sound. Mastering techniques for vinyl involve sound alterations that also impact the results audibly. Limiting and EQ applied to make it all work on vinyl can now be skipped because CD has no grooves that can interfere with eachtoher You may like those alterations, but you cannot claim that's how the sound was intended.
