Sam I am
by sammy hagar
===============
Well...
I tried to be your paperboy,
Tried to be your boy scout,
Tried to be your ice cream man
I could not be your soldier
Or even drive your bus
My skills aren't always inobvious
Well, I hope you understand,
I'm doin' the best I can.
I ain't no perfect man, but...
Sam I Am!
{Chorus}
I'm a bad-talkin' fighter!
Silver bullet rider!
I'm a flip-flop strider!
A guitar moonlighter!
I'm a through it all nighter!
Your Holy Ghost Rider!
A little shade whiter!
I'm the rock and roll driver, yeah!
Oh, yeah...that's all I am!
Tried to be your oil man,
Tried to be your big boss,
Tried to be your broker,
But ya took a loss...huh!
It's just a hopeless case,
And I ain't no lawyer.
I only got a few tricks I can show ya.
And, I hope you understand,
I do the best I can.
I ain't no Superman, but...
Sam I Am!
{Chorus}
And, I'm a feel-good doctor!
Big bad talker!
After midnight walker!
Sittin' on the bay docker!
I'm a sunshine stalker!
A heavy-weight watcher!
Heavens, door knocker!
Blue, White and Red Rocker!
Oh, Yeah! Oh, Yeah! That's all I am.
I tried to be everything to you,
Yeah, but it would not do.
You're nothing on my resume,
But I can rock you, and roll you,
Each and every day.
Have mercy on me,
I am not sorry.
Believe me, it's easy.
I do my best to be a straight-shot shooter!
A Bad Motor Scooter!
Sunny honeymooner!
Your heavy metal crooner!
Make you wanna holler!
Shirt with no collar!
Just a couple inches taller!
White, Blue and Red Rocker!
Oh, Yeah! Oh, Yeah!
I said, Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
That's all I am, that's all I am,
Baby, Baby, Baby...
Sam I Am.

Ozone
by Ace Frehley
===============
I'm the kind of guy who likes feelin' high
Feelin' high and dry, and i really like to fly
I'm your kinda guy, girl i'm not too shy
And i want you to fly, so i think you oughta try
Ozone, ozone, ozone, ozone
I'm your kinda guy and i'm not too shy
Feelin' high and dry, and i want you to be mine
So i think it's time, girl, to start feeling fine
Feeling good all the time, so i think you oughta try
Ozone, ozone, ozone, ozone
Now i'm the kinda guy who likes getting high
Getting high and dry, and i do it all the time
If you think it's a crime and you don't wanna try
Something that'll make you high, then i think i'll say goodbye
'cos i'm the kind of guy who likes getting high
Getting high and dry, and i do it all the time
Now i'm much too high, i am high and dry
And i'm feelin' fine, i'm feelin' good all of the time... (to fade)
If you want a *real* answer... Hagar... hands down. He's a stellar
player. I saw his 1980 Street Machine Tour, and he just wailed....
His licks won't be remembered as fondly as Ace's. He won't have as many
people call him an inspiration, but he was the better technical player.
This probably wasn't intended for a serious answer, but I'd also say
Sam is better hands down in a general sense. I'd take his Montrose
stuff like "Good Rockin' Tonight", "Bad Motor Scooter" and "Rock Candy"
any day over any of Ace's tunes, not to mention his work with Van
Halen. Ace's Kiss solo record was really good and I have it in my car
somewhere, but I can only take them for a short period of time, while
some of Sam's stuff (solo and VH) I can listen to over and over again.
Ace is probably the better guitarist, but I don't think by much. He's a
big influence on young guitarists, but more for the makeup and smoking
pickups then anything else. Sam is by far the better singer.
It may be an unpopular opinion, but I'll gladly go on record (and take
the slings and arrows that come with it) and say that I think Sammy
Hagar has one of the best rock singing voices in the history of the
medium. Sure, you have to take a slice of cheese with some of his
tunes, but the same can be said of most rock bands and singers. Back in
the day when I was auditioning singers for my (failed) band, I wanted a
guy who had a voice like Hagar, a hell of a yeller who could actually
carry a tune. Unfortunately, all I got were guys that sounded like air
raid sirens.
Ace has a cool voice, or at least he used to, but his songs? Oh man,
other than that handful on his solo record from the Kiss days, none of
the rest impressed me. I bought the first few Frehley's comet releases,
and was completely unimpressed. He seemed to have one good solo
record's worth of tunes in him, and he blew his wad back then.
McQ
Actually, I'd say your unpopular opinion is that ACE is a better
guitarist.... I mean, I'm an Ace fanatic, but even I know his limits.
You don't think you'd pick up any tips from playing with Eddie Van Halen
for years and years?? Have you heard any of the VH bootlegs with the
deuling solos???
Granted, it's all subjective, but, for as much as I hate what Sammy did
to VH, his guitar playing wasn't to blame..
>Montrose stuff like "Good Rockin' Tonight", "Bad Motor
>Scooter" and "Rock Candy"
The first Montrose album is an all-time classic, as well as very
influential. Great stuff. Van Halen used to play songs from it during
their LA club days. I find myself listening to their second release
("Paper Money") more often than the debut. "Connection" and "I Got The
Fire" are great songs. The title track is pretty good too.
I'm guessing KISS are fans of Montrose as well. They used to play "Rock
The Nation" and "Bad Motor Scooter" immediately before they came on
stage during the 2003/2204 World Domination and 2004 "Rock The Nation"
tours. Their live 2005 DVD is called "Rock The Nation". I know Paul
Stanley's a big fan. He (as well as Hagar) are contributing vocals to
the new Montrose album.
>Ace's Kiss solo record was really good and I have it in
>my car somewhere
The one from the late 70's? I bought that one on vinyl. Still have it
somewhere. Don't remember too much about it. New York Groove was pretty
good.

Well this KISS fan is fully aware of Montrose, and I'm sure there are

>If you want a *real* answer... Hagar... hands down.

Agreed.
Hagar as a guitarist is very underrated.
I actually feel a little sorry for Ace.
I remember that Family Guy episode where he keeps interjecting
inappropriate sayings like "My Grand Slam was supposed to be with
sausage." and "Rock and Roll!".
Freakin' hilarious (Eddie better be careful, he's heading down the
parody path himself).
p.s. What's Ace been up to? Last I heard he was working on a new album.
Hagar's got a new album coming out in a couple months and he's going
out on tour (Michael Anthony is tagging along as a special guest for
many of the gigs). Hagar's playing a lot of surprisingly huge venues.
=====
Q: You list your influences as Sammy Hagar and Ace Frehley.
I find that to be a very interesting combination. What is it about
these two musicians that you like so much?
A: Those are the first concerts I ever saw. It's the first time that I
ever saw bands live. I had never seen anything like Sammy Hagar.
He came out opening for Boston. All he did was run around like
Angus Young and his songs were great. He learned to play from
Montrose, and I like his style; it was just these hammer-ons and
pull-offs, and the pentatonic scale. He's not as good as Ronnie
Montrose or anything but?
Q: But he wasn't trying for that anyway. He was just rock n roll.
A: Yeah, and he sang...like unbelievable. And I like his songs; he
always rocked! He has a great voice and he rocked.
- Reb Beach
=====
Q: You have only 5 albums you can listen to for the rest of
your life. What are they? (no greatest hits, box sets or live
albums):
1) Montrose/Montrose
2) Led Zeppelin/ II
3) Billion Dollar Babies/Alice Cooper
4) QUEEN/QUEEN II
5) BEATLES/White Album

Ace and Peter did not do their voices on those Family Guy episodes; unknowns
voiced them. Only Gene and Paul did their own voices.
> p.s. What's Ace been up to? Last I heard he was working on a new album.
Ace had been saying for many years that he's been working on a new album, so
frankly I don't expect it to surface in this lifetime. However, he has
apparently been sober and healthy for a couple years now, so one can only
hope he will actually release something.

I could be wrong, but I think those episodes were made when Ace and Peter
were in the band but weren't aired for a couple of years due to the show's
on-again, off-again history with Fox.

### imo, VH lucked out with both dave and sam. each guy did a really
good job. now for my money, robin zander of cheap trick has the best
rock voice out there and still does to this day. he can pull off the
ballads and the rockers equally well and surprisingly, he's the 2nd most
intense singer i've seen, behind henry rollins.
the best female rock vocal was stevie nicks but unfortunately her voice
is trashed these days.

Pretty cool stuff.
Hagar and VH appeared on an episode of The Simpson's (Willie Nelson was

Just flip a coin.
Fuck, thats funny! Funny because it's true. Thanks for that, Rich.
Who is that woman in the background?
Peter
RoughEdge.com: Yeah, right on, man. So David Lee Roth is going to be a
paramedic, of all things!
Billy Sheehan: Yeah, I just talked with some people who know him. He's
already delivered a baby and he donates his pay to charity and it's a pretty
cool adventure. As much I know Dave, I know he's doing it just for the
adventure. He doesn't need the money. Here's a guy who's had quadruple,
quintuple platinum records and he's set for life, so why not go out and look
at it from that point-of-view? Actually, my hat's really off to him for
doing that.
RoughEdge.com: Same here.
Billy Sheehan: Pretty cool.
RoughEdge.com: I agree. Did you have any indication when you played with him
that he would one day make such a drastic career move?
Billy Sheehan: I know we used to tell a lot of stories down in the basement
where we were rehearsing and it was an amazing time, you know, some of the
rock stories we heard. Dave, some were related to him, Steve from his Zappa
days, me from my Talas days and all that stuff. Dave, at one time, did work
in an emergency room.
RoughEdge.com: Really?
Billy Sheehan: And his family has a medical background, so he had kind of
been up against that a little bit already. So I think that gave a hint to it
early on.
RoughEdge.com: How about that? That's pretty cool.
Billy Sheehan: Yeah.
RoughEdge.com: Now what I hear people talk about most regarding yourself is
your time with David Lee Roth and Mr. Big of course, and they always wonder
what happened to Billy Sheehan! (laughs)
Billy Sheehan: (laughs)
RoughEdge.com: I tell them to do the homework, you're out there, you know?
Billy Sheehan: Right.
RoughEdge.com: But obviously you and Steve (Vai) were the perfect duo for
Roth and you guys played with such fierce determination as if to stake your
claim at that period of time, like when "Eat 'em and Smile" came out. So how
intense was it living up to such a measure for you guys?
Billy Sheehan: Well, at the time we didn't think of it like that. It was
sheer exuberance. We were so happy to be there and we were having such a
blast and just blowing off every night, you know? We didn't have that kind
of pressure; it really was a fun time. The "Eat 'em and Smile" tour was a
riot! We had certain things we had to do in order to make the show work,
certain things like that, the requirements we had as players, to be on time
and all that stuff. We were never completely irresponsible people ever in
our lives, you know? Steve and I are both non-druggers and we're dedicated
to our craft. So for us it was normal, but for us it was like somebody
opened the door and allowed us not only to be dedicated, but to pay us for
it and allow us to play in front of fifteen to twenty thousand people a
night. So we were exuberant, we were just so pleased to be doing it, and we
were laughing our asses off and having a riot and it was great.

### awww, poor baby. and you're still here= owned.
There, you happy. I'm reposting here. And no, Sammy is far from my
hero. Never bought one of his albums, probably never will.
My point was that I've never heard a woman sound like Sammy. If you
like women who sound like men, more power to you.
Hey the webtv guy is trying to make a flame!

Have you heard "Through The Fire" by HSAS
(Hagar/Schon/Aaronson/Shrieve)?
It was released on CD a few years back.
Worth checking out.

"Ed (Van Halen) and I used to hang out a lot. I remember one concert in
particular when we played in San Francisco; Ed came with me in my car.
I drove him back to his hotel in the city. We had just finished the
HSAS record and I was playing it to him in his room. He kept on
stopping it and going back and listening to bits and pieces over again.
I could tell he was impressed. He liked Sammy's vocals and he liked the
whole record."
- Neal Schon
That was more than a few years ago - wasn't it close to 20?? Was that a
full album or an EP?
Sammy released GREAT solo stuff - 'Standing Hampton' 'Street Machine',
'Red', etc. I just didn't like him with VH.

It was originally released back in '84. It was reissued on CD back
around 1997.
It's a full album (9 songs).

Didn't Ace and Peter participate in the Christmas episode (the one that
featured "KISS Saves Santa)?

Nope. Even though their names are in the credits, Ace and Peter did not do
their voices in the Christmas episode nor the KISS-stock episode.

Thanks, that's what threw me off (their names in the credits).
Also, the fact that Ace was treated a lot better in the Christmas
episode.

Must have missed this post somehow. Sorry about that. Anyway, yeah I
actually heard of it but never bought it or downloaded it. I might try
it out in the future though.
McQ
How did they get away with that?
McQ
I just downloaded "Top Of The Rock" a few minutes ago. Pretty good
stuff, reminds me of his early solo work, but the chorus, whoever's
singing backup, man that's grating. Great guitar riff and verse
sections. I've been pretty clear in my appreciation for Montrose and
Sam's early solo work right up to his Van Halen stint. After his VH
career, though, I've been mightily disappointed by Sam's solo stuff.

They can't be any worse then dem "Damn Yankees"
