2) Jimi Hendrix
3) Eddie Van Halen
4) Jimmy Page
5) Keith Richards
1. Chuck Berry
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Jimmy Page
4. Jeff Beck
5. Eddie Van Halen
I'm sure people will claim Vai and others had the same "impact" as the
legendary players, but that's false. There are only about 5 guitar players and
maybe around 10 bands that impacted/influenced everything that is the (Rock)
industry we know of today.

True, I was thinking that Chuck Berry did more for Rock and Roll guitar than
Holly.
Holly didn't do a thing for the guitar movement. Rock and Roll music in
general? Yes.
I would also add Jeff Beck. Maybe I should have replaced Blackmore with
Beck since he was Ritchie's idol apparently. Page/Clapton. Perhaps but
it's been said that Blackmore's playing influenced more European guitarists
which is why you get guitarists like John Norum, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc...
I should also add from the beginning...Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Django
Reinhardt. Oh well. What do I know :-(

Interesting list. It is so hard to narrow down the five or ten or whatever
greatest guitarists(due to the different styles).
I would favor these chaps.....Al Dimeola, Walter Trout, Steve Howe,
Yngwie(for the shred stuff), Steve Morse, plus many more.
Yeah, he really should blaze through more classical scales with a harmonizer
and have lengthy 10 minute songs about hobbits and devils. Fuck you, assface.
I guess you didn't read the original post in it's entirety. It was about Guitar
Players that influenced the "guitar" movement. Not people that influenced rock
music. Maybe you didn't understand the question. If Buddy Holly influenced Rock
Guitar then I guess The Big Bopper, Elvis, Little Richard, Valens did as well.
Buddy Holly was a rock and roll star, not a guitar legend. Anyone else have any
thoughts?
Let me look at my calendar. Yep dude, you're right. "Name Your Top Guitarists" posts always come up at the end of the month!! This NG has some kind of 'Best Guitarists Menstral Cycle'!!
After perusing my DSM-III(I don't have the latest 4th edition) and Physicians Desk Reference, there appears to be no medical record of this phenomena. I guess we must all live through this phase and hope things will be back to normal after the first week of November.

Elvis' guitarists (from different eras)Scotty Moore and James Burton were very
influential. Jimmy Page has said Scotty Moore is the reason he picked up a
guitar. James Burton's finger picking style was very influential. Just ask Mark

Actually I did know that. I was poking fun at both Nelsons. I suppose it was
inaccurate do to the fact that one plays bass. But it was an obvious joke.
I heard a CD of Brett and some other guy a few years back. I had no idea he
was good until then. nevertheless, I was greatly impressed.

I agree with 3 of these, but Reid never did anything innovative, and
really, neither did Page. Reid just happened to be in a black band in
the 80s, at the height of the glam metal scene. I think it's the novelty
aspect that gives him clout, but he really doesn't have a distinct
technique, nor was he any great songwriter. Page, on the other hand, is
basically the most primitive of all the late-60s guitar heroes. Hendrix
and Beck had far better technique than he, Green was far bluesier than
he ever could have been, and Clapton, well, Page was better than
Clapton, but then again, who wasn't? Now, I do think Jimmy Page was a
good, even great guitar player, but because there were several better
players than he, during his prime, I can't see him in the top 5.

Ace Frehley has more pock marks on his face than the moon.
2. Keith Partridge - How many aspiring young rockers begged Mom and Dad for
a Sears Airline guitar after seeing the chicks all over this hunka-hunka
like flies on shit? A groundbreaking trend-setter than transcended genres.
3. Frank Marino - Jimi reincarnated. No, really, just ask him! If he were
dead Janie Hendrix would dig him up and sell tickets...
4. Tiny Tim - Not strictly a guitarist per se, but who could escape the
influence of his ukelele technique? Years later, his influence still looms
large in the works of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, and scores of
other modern-day axe-masters.
5. Carlos Cavazos - Who here was not moved to tears by the artistry of
"Battle Axe"? The lyrical beauty of the lead guitar work in "Cum On Feel
The Noize"?
LOFL!! Frank Marino makes his triumphant return to amVH!!

Just to clarify: I happen to love old KISS so please don't take what I am
saying the wrong way. It's pretty clear though that KISS/Ace's larger than life
image is what had the kids digging KISS and sighting them as influences. I mean
take a simple example: It's 1976 and Ace is in the band Thin Lizzy(instead of
KISS) and Scott Gorham is in KISS (instead of Thin Lizzy). My bet is that Ace
wouldn't be on your list of top 5 and that you wouldn't have been a Thin Lizzy
fan at all. I will take it a step further: Even if Thin Lizzy were playing the
KISS tunes from 1976 and KISS was doing the Lizzy tunes, I don't believe you
would have been as attracted to Ace. There's nothing wrong with liking a band
because of their image or a fantasy. KISS was a HUGE phenomenon and the image
clearly overpowers the music. Always has and always will. I still love old KISS
though. I just think the technical end of the band is totally blown out of the
water.
So you AREN'T denying the part about the trailer park, are you?

Ha ha ha ha, that is the most white-boy statement I have heard in my entire
life.
I agree. Gary Moore is better than most of the 70's players that people site as
influences Etc. I think a lot of kids that were starting out on guitar just
focussed on the guitar player of the bands they liked most. Lots of people
think Ace Frehley was something special but if you put Ace in Thin Lizzy he
wouldn't even be remembered today! Gary is totally underrated.
The only thing that's ever been special about Ace Frehley is his
blood-alcohol level.

Yes and his hideous pock marked face.
5) Phil Keaggy
4) Kenny Wayne Shepherd
3) Eddie Van Halen
2) Stevie Ray Vaughn
1) Andre Segovia
And if you're wondering where Hendrix is, I picked Keaggy instead of Hendrix
because of an answer Jimi gave to a reporter's question about how it feels
to be the greatest guitar player of all time, and Jimi responded, "I dunno.
Why don't you ask Phil Keaggy?" (quote may be paraphrased, but that's
basically what he said)
A word about Segovia.....you won't find a single guitar player out there
who doesn't take the art of playing the guitar seriously that doesn't think
Segovia was the best there ever has been on the guitar.
Individual playing styles may vary, as do people's judgement parameters on
who are the "BEST" guitar players, but Andre Segovia played the guitar like
no one before or since. If you don't know who he is, listen to some of his
music....it's located in that section you usually avoid like the
plague......Classical Music section. Check it out.

Glad I amuse you. Do you assume that unless you're black you can't really
play the blues?
Let me qualify then: the best ELECTRIC blues guitarist.
Short answer yes. Long answer no.
That's a really short long answer.
