All,

Jason Kramer (I think) started this thread over in the King's X and Extreme
newsgroups, and I'd like to start it here, just to see what y'all are up to.

Let's introduce each other to some new tunes. Tell us what's in your player
this week. I'll start:

Jellyfish - Spilt Milk: These guys write KICK ASS songs, but they are a bit
sugary at times.

The Grays - Ro Sham Bo: Yet another group that writes KICK ASS songs, and they
named their album after a nut-kicking contest. Classic!

Blind Melon - Blind Melon: Love 'em or hate 'em, they did have tasty guitars
and a kicking rhythm section. Fun stuff. Too bad they ended up 1 and a half hit
wonders... Shannon Hoon - yet another dumb drug casualty... Why can't these
guys just stay away from the shit?

Rush - Rush: One of my all-time favorite albums to play along with. Yeah, it's
70s rock cheese, but Alex Lifeson is CRAZY on this one...

Reel Big Fish - Turn The Radio Off: Punk-Ska with talent. Great horn section. I
love 'em! If you don't like it, you probably don't "get it"...

All - Percolater: I just love this album. Imagine crazy chord voicings played
over fast tasty punk drumming (Bill Stevenson is one of the most underrated
drummers EVER, IMNSHO) with a poppy singer. That's All...

Chicago - Group Portrait (Discs 1-3): Terry Kath is probably THE most
underrated guitarist ever. He was creative, flashy and tasty, and he had
excellent phrasing. He was one of Jimi Hendrix's favorite guitarists. Listen to
the FAST arpeggios in "Questions 67 and 68". That song was recorded in 1968.
The man was before his time...

That's all. Let's hear yours!!!

Good idea Linus...let me open my CD player up (this should shock a
few):

Metallica "Live Shit...." - One my favorite rhythm section in rock and
roll. Next to Neil Peart, Lars is the man.

Rush "Grace Under Pressure" - Needless to say, Geddy and Neil are
RHYTHM. I wish most rock groups had HALF the talent these two have.

Van Halen "Fair Warning" - This CD NEVER leaves my CD player.

Alice In Chains "Unplugged" - I think this is better than Nirvana's
Unplugged.

Metallica "Reload" - The fan poll in Guitar World picked this CD as
the biggest disappointment; I totally disagree. "Fire" is so cool.

Let's see mine:

1-Van Halen "Greatest Hits" - What can I say about this one......

2-Nuno "Schizophonic" - This CD NEVER leaves my CD player.

3-Dream Theater "Falling Into Infinity" - Another that RARELY leaves my CD
player.

4-Rush "Exit... Stage Left" - That's definately their best live album.

5-Extreme "III Sides To Every Story" - Well, that CD's been playing since 1993 it
seems non-stop.......

Great idea!!!

- Fair Warning - Van Halen (What a damn good album!!!!!!!!)
- UnBoxed - Sammy Hagar (Good overview of his greatest '80's solo tunes)
- Night Songs - Cinderella (Yes its '80's hair metal, but who cares, fun
music!!)
- Ozzman Cometh - Ozzy (Rocks!!!!)
- Cryptic Writings - Megadeth (Best album to come out them in a long
while. "Trust" rocks!!)
- Appetite For Destruction - Guns N Roses (Always a good stand by
favorite)

List could go on, but those six have been getting the most play in my CD
player.

I have Wild Frontier and never got into it that much. I like Back on the
Streets, Corridors of Power, Victims of the Future, and After the War. The
blues stuff is ok but after awhile it seemed he was doing it b/c his rock'n'roll
stuff wasn't selling in the US. I rather liked his rock songs...

Both of these are great albums. If you haven't already check out Jason
Falkner's solo album - very cool, catchy pop.

In case you weren't joking, Ro Sham Bo was not named after a nut-kicking
contest - it was named after the game Rock-Paper-Scissors. They were originally
going to go with the French spelling of it, but they
thought it looked too pretentious so they went with the phonetic spelling.

In my cd player this week:

Van Halen - Best of: I just listen to the last 3 new songs - IMHO, the best
material the band has done in the last 10 years (I haven't the new album yet).

Marshall Crenshaw - Field Day: More catchy, 3 1/2 minute power pop gems.

Ric Ocasek - Troublizing: Just picked this one up- halfway decent semi-rocking
songs, but no big deal.

Redd Kross - Phaseshifter: These guys combine glam, punk, metal, with Beatle-ish
pop. Hooks aplenty, with musicianship to back it up. I am surprised that these
guys never made it bigger.

Agreed as far as the blues stuff goes. Personally I loved Victims of the
Future and Wild Frontier, but After the War sounded sort of contrived to
me as well, especially "Led Clones", which bashes Zeppelin ripoff bands
while "borrowing" heavily from Zep at the same time (not to mention a
slurring Ozzy on vocals). Sad to say that it looks like Gary's blues
angle will continue, and his great original stuff will continue to be
forgotten.
