I have read many articles dealing with red rot, but I do not believe
that I could have caused it. I took my trombone home once every other
week and cleaned it for four years, and by the fourth year, I already
had red rot. I never stopped using the trombone during the summer
because my school has summer marching band, which prepares us for the
competition season. And there also, I cleaned it every other week. So
I ask humbly of course, what could be some of the other causes of this
problem that is so regretable fatal to my instrument.

If it makes and difference in the answer, I have a Holton Student
TR602 Trombone with gold laquer.

Where is the red rot at on your horn? In my understanding, lipids are the
main cause of this problem. Since you clean your horn every other week,
that shouldn't be the problem. Are you sure it is red rot, and not some
other form of corrosion?

The form of corrosion is everwhere on the slide. I am pretty sure that
it is red rot, because they are red spots that are flaky.
