I have recently come across a Giardineli 6D mouthpiece. It looks to be
kinda old but in really good shape. I don't play the trombone - I play sax,
but my girlfriend does! We're both music majors in college and I wanted to
know if anyone can tell me if this is a good or rare or valuable mouthpiece,
and if so, what is is good for? Jazz? Classical? Chamber? If anyone
knows anything about this MPC, let me know all you can! Thanks!

Giardineli doesn't seem to be much into standardization. The 6D may be what
came with the Olds student line in the '70's (the Ambassador). Ask your
girlfriend if the 'piece seems unusually small. If it does then its the same
one I got as a kid. I find it useful for jazz, for my alto, and for
ridiculously high tenor parts (the kind where high Bb is a low note).

I just got my new Giardinelli catalog. The 6D is listed as a medium deep
"depth of cup". Bore size is 6.0mm, cup diameter is 24.5mm.

Since I have a 5M & 5D (rated as good for club & studio work) and
they are a bit small in size for me, I would say the 6D could be classified
as a small tenor trombone mouthpiece. I ended up using their 4M, which
has a cup diameter of 25.4mm and a bore of 6.4mm.

A Giardinelli 6D came with a used King 3B I bought this year. It is very close
in diameter to a Bach 12C but the cup is V or funnel shaped rather than bowl
shaped. Therefore, high notes come out a little easier. I didn't care for it
that much and sold it along with another trombone. I don't think it's rare,
and value is in the eye (or lip) of the player.

It is definitely not rare, as it is available in the latest Giardinelli catalog,
along with a 6M.
